Looks like my BC is starting to wake up.

Nice to see! Ours are still in containers of over three inches of ice - funny part is as the days are getting longer they are just starting to show tiny dark nubs all along the branches. I envy the longer growing season sometimes but I get over it quickly when I realize how much more work it must be

Getting some growth. Unfortunately, the wired branches haven't done well at all, they had some growth, then the growth died, now it looks like, the two mid wired branches died. Guess I wasn't planning on keeping them anyway.

Growing like a weed. The tree was attacked by an iguana today, don't know what it was after, but there was a large hole dug in the bin, dirt everywhere around the pool area. Branches were bent and a couple of the wired ones were broken. The broken ones I'll remove, they'll eventually be replaced by some of these new growths. Wondering when I should start cleaning it up, cutting growth off. The trunk is pretty much as big as I want it to get, could get more root spread or even knees, but I don't think I want the trunk any larger. It's now leaning because of the iguana.

Iguanas, lol. I thought I had it rough with squirrels. On my bald cypress, I usually trim off what I don't see as part of the plan as soon as I get a chance, sometimes when it is just budding (rub them off). They grow so prolifically, you really don't have to worry about it. Others might do it differently, but that is how I handle it.

I was thinking about that also, My BC puts out so many shoots in all diff directions, seems a waste...assuming it has enough roots.

Was taught a very I,portent lesson today by my Bald Cypress. They grow fast and the wiring has to be closely watched. All the wiring cut in on the branches, some quite dramatically. I cleaned it up today, lost a branch or two when taking off wiring. I need to keep a closer eye on it in the future.

They don't work well with the flat top style I'm going for. I'm not looking for the trunk to get any bigger, although I'm hoping for the buttressing to expand.

Got a break in the rains, it stormed today and filled up my BC's tub with rain water.

Looking at other BCs, my leaves look quite long compared to others. Do I need to cut the leaves, cut them in half? Or just continue to defoliate until they get smaller?

I think that's what I'm going to do. The branches grow so fast and thick, it's hard to keep up.

John G recommends cutting the newly lignified growth back hard on trees in development several times a growing season... maybe to an inch or two... to stimulate back budding and more ramification.

Great for the flat top he wants to develop ;)

I think that's what I'm going to do. The branches grow so fast and thick, it's hard to keep up.

It need cutbacks, if you want a flat top you don't want it bushy - ever. Good plant and cool to see it in water. Only a few here do that myself being one of them.

Try Harder!

Hell..cut it back further!

You kind of have zonal obligations to us Northerners.

Looking good!

Thanks guys. It's definitely in standing water, will probably be that way all summer.
I lopped the top two branches off. The straight, cylindrical top has always bothered me a bit, so I'm shortening it a touch and will probably look to carve it just a little bit.
Need to take care of the shaginess!

What am I to do with this guy? I can hardly keep up!
He needs a serious trim and cut down.
