Ten4 on that, thanks VW!
Last question....My wife bought me nice stainless steel colander for tree usage.
I'm a little worried about the steel getting too hot in the sun.
Would you recommend a plastic colander, or homemade grow box instead?
I was thinking that maybe I could drape a white cloth around the steel colander, but I dunno....
Might just hit the Wal-Mart and find some plastic ones....

See @Vin of SS pot temps.

Cool.

Cant stop wont stop. As purchased the morning0628171046.jpgexposed the base a little better. And found out it was repotted recently so I back filled and lifted the tree up some. Ill worry about a repot next summer0628171052.jpg 0628171112.jpg
Diliberated on desing, knuckles, and cut out about 50% of the foliage out. The left side is being left as a sacrifice and I diddnt dare remove anymore. 0628171158.jpgAnd some wire.0628171423.jpg

I assume you have no shade where you keep your trees? If you are watering your trees frequently getting overly hot should not be a problem. You could warp with a towel of some sort. I prefer the wooden boxes the Colander is next then the pond baskets.

I believe you're referring to this: https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/a...completely-different.23330/page-4#post-368445 @just.wing.it I think you'll find the information rather surprising.
Thanks again Vin, actually I'm not too surprised, but I definitely should have known better....
I know stainless steel is a poor heat and electricity conductor, due to some things I do at work....
I love drawing connections between bonsai and my job.

Here is another Mugo I am going to be working on today. Remember these are not masterpiece Yamadori trees and these are just run of the mill nursery Mugo anybody can find if they look. I use these trees to sell at our summer shows. Until recently I just sold the trees in the nursery containers but due to the urging of friends and enemies I have started to please the friends and quiet down the enemies. This Mugo was reduced down from one of those 1 gallon containers, put in this bonsai pot and lightly wired last summer. As you can see the tree did fine and came through the winter happy and growing. So I am going to do some fine detail work on the tree.

IMG_1370.JPG IMG_1369.JPG Well, after staring at this Mugo for two days I have decided that the best way I can see to thin this baby out is in the following pictures. Let me know what you guys think! The trunk actually leans away in this picture so this view will probably be the back. I will also tilt the tree slightly towards the camera when I repot..... anyways... thx 4 the input!

The Dabbing Mugo Pumillo. Working hard and perfect! 20170630_055525.jpg

@Vance Wood some of my buds are setting fat and lighter...
Is this a sign of too late to cut...too early? Correct time.?20170630_055549.jpg

Fitting to repot one or 2 here soon.

And so it begins. Removed from the nursery pot. Note, When I originally purchased I cut the pot down to soil level so to allow slow washing off of the loose top soil while watering. This morning I cleaned off about an inch of top soil, using chop stick, plastic brush and a little raking. What would be next step, prune to desired future shape?

I am not sure what you are referring to cutting? If you are talking about cutting off the new growth in order to get back budding,--- you probably do not want to do that right now. Without reducing the tree down to some sembalance of direction you want to develop, you are just going to exacerbate the "The Mugo is a Bush" observation. This is why Mugos are seen in the shape they have in the nursery. They respond like no other Pine and can be made into shapes like this. This trait makes them great landscape trees and this trait makes them great bonsai if you control it.

Most of the trees many of you have posted in this cycle are trees that need to be leashed in and their growth controlled. I'm seeing some great trunks but things up from that point seem to be questionable. You need to look for the decent second step. If you don't see it just thin the tree out a bit and let it be until you can see a direction to go. It will reveal itself to you, or actually your personal growth will start to see things you did not earlier. This is why the pond basket, colondar, and Screened in planter box is valuable. It makes fine roots and makes the drastic reduction of the root system possible.

OK, so I cut off about 2" from the bottom of the rootball, felt like I left a good amount, and repotted in this pond basket, 12"x 12"x 12". Started to thin out. Question, can/should I cut back to new buds? Did I leave to much foliage? Can I add more wire just to help with seeing the direction it will go?

I would leave the tree alone for the rest of the year and see how it does. I see a good possibility in your second photo #2876.
I posted a larger version on the original picture and I enlarged the center portion of the photo to detail the trunk . Try to remember we are trying to isolate a decent trunk line. The trunk is the foundation of all bonsai, especially Mugos because as I have told earlier in this thread, a Mugo bonsai has to be built from the bottom up. In the chopped photo I have zoomed in on the trunk do you see a possibility here?
