The area I have circled looks like it was decandled. I think I can see a stub of a spring candle.

Why is the needles so short for this time of the year? These are Spring growth so I would think they should be a bit longer consider this one came from CA. Other than that it looks healthy.
It could have been pruned improperly last fall, or this spring. But you're correct, something is wrong with timing. Who knows, maybe that's why the original owner sold it. It really takes a full, attentive year to understand how jbp respond. To the OP, I would definitely NOT candle cut this one this year.

I've cut in the fall and it seemed to back bud a little better then cutting the candles in summer. However, it seemed to produce weaker needle buds amongst older needles instead of budding at the end of the branch where the cut was made. I've cut near the middle of August and had needles within 4 weeks. They (JBP) seem to grow well into November in my area. Fall temperatures seem to extend later and later.

Ha....edit....don't do what I do for christsake!!!! Every thing is growing well, if you were suspicious!!;):D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Yep. The spring candles have already been cut, and the young growth is summer candles.

LanceMac: fall decandling can cause backbudding. It is NOT the usual way to treat JBP. IT's kind of a "last resort" method to force backbudding if it hadn't ever backbudded in the past.

I've never had to do it on one of mine. I know that Jonas did to one of his on the advice of Akio Kondo. (Note: that was ONE pine. Jonas has hundreds!)

@Adair M just to be clear, tree allowed to grow unchecked until fall tickles it's dormancy. I'm not cutting twice.

You use a laser scalpel....I'm still grappling with the wheel.....;);):D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I tend to agree with adair. Considering socal is so warm, its extremely possible they decandled in late may. A month later and youd pry be looking at the summer candles.

Fresh light green needles shorter than older dark green growth and the origin of the tree say it's been decandled and what we can see is really the 2nd flush of growth. Works already done till the fall, I think.

I understand. It's called the "fall JBP technique". It forces backbudding. If you get backbuds to pop, you can't decandle them for st least one year. Sometimes two. Until they get strong.

So, it slows down your development by a couple years. If you have a choice, always, always, always decandle in summer. The fall thing is a desperate attempt to get backbudding. Else, you have to graft.

I am noticing that some of the new growth have brown tips. What is the cause of this and how can I treat it?

Most of the brown tips I saw were needles that had been cut. One year old needles will start to fade and yellow starting about this time of year.
