What's wrong with my trident?

My trident is developing these little black spots on the new growth. Seems to be getting worse the hotter it gets.

Fungus or heat damage? There are no bugs on the tree and it's not losing leaves.

It was sold to me as a trident by what I was told is a reputable seller. It looks nothing like my amur but it obviously doesn't look like your trident either.

I would listen to @Smoke if he actually have me advice.

It could be that the fungus is making it do what's called "witch brooming"
I use this, it is 90% SULFER
Powder at the base and I mix it with water and spray my ENTIRE garden, yard, beds and trees with it. No fungus here, been doing it for years.image.jpeg

@Stickroot @Brian Van Fleet Thank you, this was the info I needed. I don't have any sulfur but I do have a different fungicide that I went ahead and sprayed everything with. If it doesn't help, I'll get the sulfur.

I assume I should remove the affected leaves?

I could write a whole book on fungus in maples and no one would read it!

Leaf blight...fungus. treat with daconil weekly for four weeks. Take off affected leaves.

This fungus thing is getting to be repetitious.

MAPLES IN ONES COLLECTION SHOULD BE PROPHYLACTICALLY TREATED WITH FUNGICIDE YEAR ROUND AS BONSAI. THE LEAVES AND THE SOIL (MOISTURE) IS JUST TOO CLOSE TOGETHER!

I said that in another thread today at 10:30 AM.

Then you posted this one. The fungus is called anthracnose. If one is going to keep maples learn about it. Read about it and learn to read the signs of infection. Mostly distorted curled leaves like a claw with brown margins that are not heat burn but leaf blight. There is a difference.

As you can see by the threads Brian posted I have done my fair share of treating fungus on everyone else's plants. Use the search function here and you can find all sorts of info, much of it MINE!

I typed fungus into the search feature and there are ten pages about it. The first ten or so that came up are all recent threads I have posted the remedy for.

For the record sulphur is a fall fungicide and not recommended in the heat with maples.

I think yours <might> be some some sort of morphologically unusual Acer buergerianum (trident maple). Over the years I have seen pictures of tridents with many different and highly variable leaf shapes.

I would like to see a trident expert chime in on this. Now that I have looked more closely at yours Gail, I am 99% sure that it is indeed a trident, one with an unusual degree of serration around the edges of the leaves. I want one.

Here is a group of five tridents growing rank in a large colander.

Here are shots of leaves from all over the plant. All the same tridents. All trifidiums.

I have a Japanese maple in the ground in full sun, lots of wind, in Dallas:eek: New it probably wouldn't work. Last year at this time the leaves looked like what everyone is posting. Burnt looking. This year they look great. May still burn up but I added some shade that helps it from 2pm until around 6pm. Stopped watering the whole tree. Water at the base and also increased the watering a lot this year. Pro active on spraying it with fungus spray. So far doing these things seemed to help. Hydrogen peroxide spray too. The little trident seems to handle the heat better.

GailC...I don't use fungicide...

But on them Mirai Videos they sure talk about NOT using some things on some trees.

I don't think you are into these specifics yet....

But it sure is worth investigating!

PM me your address....
That elm is doing well and has all but jumped into a box for me!

@Smoke
So do you have specific schedules on you fungus spraying? I need to start since I see a lot of curved and burnt leaves.

Curved and burnt doesn't mean fungus. Curled into the shape of a claw is a better discriptor. a picture is better.
