The following tree is a Ponderosa I collected in CO. I was lucky that I was able to get the whole rootball and the tree grew like it was never been touched. Now, I am planning to bring it to the Dallas Bonsai Convention Next weekend.

This is a Winged Elm, Ulmus alata. Stands about 3 ft. tall from soil level. Collected 25Mar2017 from a high tension power line right of way in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. Collected by myself. There are several hundred of Winged Elm in this power line right of way. Eventually the power company will come along and poison all of them. I have one more very large nice one spotted for collection next spring if I can beat them too it. The same area has a goodly number of Hawthorn also.

There is a heavy deer population in the area and they keep them cropped off and that is why they have such fine ramification dug right out of the ground. Once this finishes opening buds my main concern will be trimming it up on the way to being a bonsai without loosing all the ramified branching. IMG_0993.jpg IMG_0994.jpg IMG_0995.jpg IMG_0997.jpg

My first after the move this spring - a privet dug up at work to make way for a handicap ramp. It sat on the curb for 48 hrs before I found it. Cut it way back and it seems fine. These guys are tough as nails.

Shohin Juniperus communis. This one was dug up by its first owner in the French Alps, about 15 years ago. I got this one in April and for now it's left to grow for two years, since the foliage is rather sparse...P4295571.JPG P4295578.JPG P4295579.JPG

Are you grafting roots on this tree? Noticed the black nursery pot.

Yes you are correct, I'm keeping the natural foliage but grafting roots to shorten the tree. I think once I remove the bottom section, the final image will be more powerful and below the black nursery pot is not all that interesting.

Great trees!

Any advise on going on your first outing? I have always found my trees in friends or families yards, or nursery stock.

This Saturday will be my wife and my first trip out hiking to search.

highlighting that strong twist will be stunning in the future! In the coming years I hope to see this in person.
