Mulberry...Will it Bonsai?

This spring I decided this one is coming with me next spring.

I think so much natural has happened to the stump...man marks are minimal.
8 trunk...most different sized...

I pruned it in spring....then bound it up...
Cut it loose and back today.

Gotta keep an eye on it and rub buds....make sure I get good keepers....
It buds like mad masses...Lil too much with no attention.

Once that is cleaned up and potted, I am sure it will have a killer base to it!

I decided to shape a smaller trunk off one of my fig trees to prep it to be a Shohin figsai. Let me know what you thinking, I am going with that classic backwards S shape with a branch coming off of the first bend (I didn't have thicker wire, so I had to improvise for now, haha). The extra growth will be cut off once everything heals and hardens off.

Do you think the angles are too steep, should I go with a more gentle tight curve like this?

I made the executive decision to change the angle, I think it's a huge improvement! It simplifies the supports and moves the composition and future leader towards the viewer. What do you think?

I made the executive decision to change the bends to make it look more natural. This brings the composition and a possible leader branch towards the viewer (which I think is more interesting). It's a little tall for Shohin, but what do you think?

Looks like culinary fig, Ficus carica. Yes, it is a bit large for shohin, but the fig is not easy to keep shohin size, if the goal is a ficus bonsai, size isn't important, the image created is important.

If you want a shohin, use a different species of ficus, perhaps F pumila, it is much easier to keep small.

I cant quite understand why people are saying that Mulberries are tender. I have had three bonsai Mulberries for a few years , left them un covered in minus 10 C over winter. and they are perfect. The only thing I have noticed is the slow growth. Would I be wise to repot them in bigger containers to let the roots spread more?

Does anyone else notice that this genus seems to have trouble with dark spots on the leaves? Maybe a fungal thing? The only truly healthy looking trees I come across are seedlings.

Havnt notice reallu, but any sweet fruiting tree is magnetic for nasties. A good regiment is required

Black spots yeah. Fungal.

I defoliated part and it came back healthy and stayed despite old leaves being spotted still.

@Giga good point, the reason I've avoided fruiting trees so far. I didn't do my homework on the spots because I had so many other issues this year. My sapling mulberries took a back seat.

I wonder if misting with hydorgen peroxide would keep it at bay. Guess i'll find out in 2018
