Cool thread! I have always been interested in mushrooms and the awesome colors/varieties there are out there. I am buying some materials right now and will be growing a mushroom garden of my own this year. Boy, I know this bonsai stuff is specific and detail oriented but you should read about mushroom cultivation if you haven't already. Disinfect this, autoclave that, put gloves on before you put gloves on your gloves, etc. It looks challenging but a lot of fun. I'll let you guys know how it goes..whenever I actually get there.

Good luck! I'm into my third year growing as a hobby/side business for local farmers market and a couple restaurants now. I do it all from scratch, maintain my own cultures, make my own spawn etc, so if you need help, unsure about something just ask. It's fun and rewarding but sure does make life busier. There is always something that needs to be done yesterday.

Most 'mericans are mycophobic but not me. One of my fave things was getting lost deep in the woods following the shroom trail. Hunter-gatherer mode. After the first autum rain oyster shrooms would pop out of dead white alders in sonoma Creek. Big as plates. then it was Chanterells hiding under fall leaves, same color. You don't see any, then you see one, then you see 20. Porcini, Matsutake, life was good.
Now I get them on the net.
There are old mushroom hunters and there bold mushroom hunters but there are no old, bold mushroom hunters.

It was market night tonight. Took a pic of our table at the end of the evening, only two little bags of Shittake left. I thought I'd show you all this because I think it's totally hilarious and at the same time a bit embarrassing. Third year with that banner and it wasn't until last week that I noticed there's a bit of a problem there. Damn, do I feel dumb!! No one else has ever said anything either though..image.jpg

The shaggy parasol is popularly praised as a choice edible mushroom. However, it contains toxins which can cause gastric upsets when eaten raw or undercooked, and some individuals show a strong allergic response even after cooking

I'd give it a shot, after positive ID, never seen one here though. Whenever I eat a new mushroom I eat a very small portion, then a little more next time before going for a serving of any size. There are some mushrooms out there that can kill you two weeks after eating them.

It's not a good idea to eat any mushrooms raw actually, many can cause bad reactions. Even the button mushrooms that many people eat raw contain a carcinogen that is destroyed by cooking
