Remember, reducing it isn't out of the question. I've heard mixed results. Regrowing the leader to match the trunk would take years up here though.

And it was definitely styrofoam in the soil. Perlite you can crush, this you couldn't. Very strange.

Where are you located- I know I have a super long growing season, and well bonsai isn't instant :D

I'm up in Northern Virginia, not much left of our season.

Please tell me you saved that mess of a root ball. I saw some awesome stuff for root cuttings.

Edit: Sorry, I see now that you have a few potted up next to the mother plant. Love the cascade cutting on the right of the main plant. Let me know if you ever consider selling one (especially that one).

I ended up breaking apart that mess and got a couple decent ones, those cascade cuttings. If they'll root I dunno, not sure if I did it right since I've never rooted roots before. Not sure if they should be in full sun, shade, or what, but fingers crossed.

Root cutting is even easier than branch cuttings. Should be 100%...just keep the soil moist...

On the report, I agree with @LanceMac10 that you could remove more roots under the trunk. Looks like the root part is still a bit thick. I think this is one of those thing you need to it right only one time and that's it. Ficus can take it... I have seen so many that got the roots cut back very hard. Anyway, I think you report this guy a bit late.

I'm well aware I could've cut it back further, but I had enough of it. I already took off A LOT of roots and didn't want to over stress this guy. Definitely not too late to do this kind of work. It'll be outside for at least another month.

Just reviving this thread to see if the root cuttings took. I'm a sucker for willow leaf root cuttings.

Unfortunately they never did. They stayed green under the cambium for a while but I lost hope for them and they've just been neglected ever since. Pretty sure I did something wrong.

I was up at Meehan's again last month when a chunky ficus caught my eye. It looked to have great shohin potential and a fat base, so naturally I had to have it.

As I looked it over after buying it, I realized that it looked familiar. Turns out, it was the tree I bought from there several years ago (the tree in this thread), but someone finally had the guts to chop it back. I don't recall how it made it's way back to Meehan's though.

Funny the way life is sometimes. Welcome back, old friend.

Well, that is something! I think you were seeing this as a much taller tree, and I think that with its size that is probably the best future for it. Don't get me wrong, I have a sumo willow leaf of my own that I am working on, but I am looking forward to finding material that can be developed into a large bonsai someday. If that is what you are thinking, then hey, at least the owner(s) since you had it have done some of the work for you on growing a new trunk section!

Do they have a big selection? They are about 2.5 hrs from me. I don't see much on their website.

Haha. I had so little money during law school, I didn't even LOOK for a bonsai shop around DC. Now I wish I had...well, maybe not...I probably would've ended up with a few more trees and divorced.
I wouldn't exactly call Rohrersville - DC....but it isn't too far.
Meehan is the best in the region....as far as I know.
Hoping that the National Arboretum has their little bonsai festival this spring, Meehan's always has good stock for sale at the show.
They didn't do it last year on account of the Wuhan Red Death and all that stuff and things.

These big enough for you? Note: these all have roots growing out of the drainage holes and down into the ground.

Pictures won't attach 🙄

Use your imagination!
Yea I don’t see the attachment. They supply to our location nursery but most are small. $25- $100 range.
