I know they aren't bonsai but they are absolutely breathtaking in their size, age, and beauty. I just wanted to share...

When the Bonsai Bug bites you find yourself eying up trees all the time. Trees you may have driven past for years and years suddenly become objects of beauty and interest. You can't seem to walk by a shrub or bush without sizing it up as a possible tree in a pot. After a while the people around you get used to the obsession but if they're not into bonsai they just don't get it. Stay passionate and your trees will show it in time.

Yes! lol exactly. I never gave the bushes around my apartment a second glance, but I notice everything now- and what's more is I appreciate the beauty of even the common shrub. And I now just realized that the huge tree/shrub right outside my door is a juniper, which I will be air layering here in a few days, once I read up on it. My good friend is the apartment manager and she doesn't mind :D

Ha, your eye gets more and more refined too, you see branch structures, tree bases, material worth collecting and then you start to get more picky as you learn what to look for and what is worth making Bonsai - just don't do it when your driving around in winter :) . Been doing this since I was 15 - fast forward to today, I'm 32 and now i'll walk up to trees like these and place my hand on them and wonder what stories they would have to tell. It's truely and great hobby/lifesyle

I was thinking just that yesterday! These trees are hundreds of years old, on the grounds of the state capital, I wondered what it had been around for, who had touched it as I was hundreds of years before me. And then I looked up and thought hmm that branch needs to go, I'd chop it there.... :p
