I like to introduce you one of the techniques used on my pomegranate. It will be very strange for all of you. I name it as " Breaking technique" (BT). It sounds as martial art, doesn't it?
This one has a lot of new shoots go upward
IMG_3293.JPG IMG_3294.JPG

I used "BT" for all of them. After.

Look at some of them

Some more details for us ignorant, @bonhe ?
It is obvious that the branch changes direction after the bend but....
Thanks for asking Alexandra.
BT has 2 purposes:
1- To create the sudden, sharp turn on the branch like you mentioned.
2- To conserve the energy production for the tree and that particular branch in the mean time to create a new shoot where I want to have. If I prune the branch back to where I want the new shoot, I will get it anyway, but I will sacrify the energy production for that branch. When that branch is still able to produce energy, the new shoot is easy to come out!

The above tree was brought out yesterday to get heavy training (I will post its process later). After almost 3 weeks from the time I used BT on it, most of affected branches (over 20 branches) are alive except one, which is not a big deal for me!

The yellow arrow shows the broken branch. The red arrow points to the new shoot.

The pink arrow points to the breaking area. It heals very well.

This tree is so heavy, so I have to use Hoyer lift (my BFF) to lift the pot up.
IMG_3624.JPG

and this hydraulic cart (my other BFF).
IMG_3623.JPG

These two are a faithful couple! Without them, I will not survive!!!
Preparing to lift the pot.

The pot was air lifted to the cart!

Before
IMG_3633.JPG

It is common to see a lot of root suckers on pomegranate.
IMG_3635.JPG

Take them out.
IMG_3636.JPG

It took me 2 days to finish the job! I combined pruning, wiring and pulling techniques.
This branch needs to be wired and prune.

Another cavity on the left

I have to propagate this special pomegranate because its flowers!
Cutting. I use pumice: mini pine barks with ratio 1:1. I place it in the 1 gallon water bottle, with the top was cut around.
IMG_3683.JPG

After watering, the top was put back. Ready to go!

I like this breaking technique. I think i will try it on my japanese quince speciosa to see if it allows more backbudding which is an issue for me. Love the latest tree by the way

Thanks Judy.
There are 4 more waiting for the haircut. My schedule is a little tight, so I have a long waiting line! :)

Cross your fingers that I did not kill my Utah Sweet or my White flower that I got from San Gabriel. I think I got a little... excited when repotting...
