I went out today to get one of the bougainvilleas that I was shipping and another right next to it that is not as far along was leaning over in its pot. It looked like a bird had jumped up on the top branch and it just leaned over.

At first, I was kind of upset because I thought it looked pretty good. Now it was leaning over with roots sticking up in the air and I was ticked... Then I took another look... spun it around... tamped the soil down and clipped off the roots that were sticking up and then took another look.

By golly, it was a ton better! LOL! That bird did not like my planting angle! I guess I agree!

So what are your stories of broken branches, storm damage, animal nibbles and any other things that you decided to keep incorporate into your design?

Yes it happens !

I got a mugo wich i dug out a garden in februari
It had three big branches to become the trunkline eventualy so two had to go but since it came out if the ground barerooted it survived and one of the big branches died and one other has only two twigs with foliage left so nature chose the new trunkline and i dig it!

I'll look, I was just in the beginning stages with it. Not sure if I took the time to snap any pics.

I had a line of four Hawthorn growing in a raised bed in my garden. I worked my way down the line with my trimmer cutting back the summers first shoots. I got to the fourth and decided to let it go a bit longer and proceeded down the line. The next morning I came out to find that a deer had come through and out of all the trees she trimmed that one Hawthorn and didn't touch any other trees. I was astonished that she trimmed back to two sets of leaves just like I was doing LOL

I have a project in the works, Japanese Maples in a lava rock (through). It's coming along nicely, close to ten years, but the main character has grown kind of, I can only think of, unpleasant, to me anyway. It's one of those things that everyone goes gaga over and just won't listen when I try to explain what I don't like about it. I just wanted to squash that top knot of branches down, but they have grown thick, thicker than I thought they would.
This winter was spent under about five feet of snow. It emerged in spring with the whole crown crushed, enough to crack it open at the joint of the branches. They have a nice downward pitch now and the cracks have healed nicely this summer. Thanks Ma, that's just what I was thinking!
