@kevinlovett86 ,

Kevin,
Welcome to wonderful world of Chinese elms,

here are two types -

[1] We call it a Yatsubusa, and the trunk might take in the open ground a
gazillion years to thicken.

[2] The second did this trunk in 6 months , as I explained.

We also had one do a fluke, fine leaves in quantity like the teeth on a comb
and slim branches, but it needed cold, and after three years passed away.
It came from a root of a normal mother elm.
Images below.
Good Day
Anthony

Close up analysis is as follows...

It might need a root trim

It has 1 surface root on the one side

Rusty wiring that’s actually painful to look at, wanna take them off so bad

Sure it’s not perfect, but I like it. The tree represents my skill, and time will make it better

Kevin,

clean-up weeds, remove wire, no pruning, make it happy, learn to
get it healthy.
Let us babble in late spring.

My first instinct would be ground grow, to fatten trunk.

How tall ?
Let us pretend it is 30 to 38 cms and needs a 8 cm trunk.
The growing would get rid of the scars and make those
curves less curvy and more useful.

When you repot, how about some root cuttings to experiment on.

Beware fertiliser, I am seeing figures of 3 N 1 P 1 K for cut roses.
So if you fertilise [ get an itch ] how about something weakened to
3 N...... as above. Perhaps once a month into most soil.
Good Day
Anthony

* If you must repot [ poor drainage ] a pot with a more rectangular
shape but about the same size.
Minimal root interference.

Grass weeded out, disgusting rusted wires removed.

It’s 250 mm tall and trunk is 16 mm at the base.

These twists do have the potential to make one seasick. Ground growing isn’t really an option, so then, overpot maybe?

And I don’t understand more rectangular, a more straight downside?
Current pot dimensions are 140 x 95 x 55 mm

So, I slipped this guy into a bigger pot. I should’ve taken photos, but forgot. It was pretty root bound in the small pot, but when I moved I didn’t do anything to the tree at all. I didn’t even comb out the roots. I’ll do all of that at the proper trimming and pruning time. This pot is almost twice the other one’s volume at 220 x 130 x 65 mm. And I liked the navy blue.

I wanted to prune the roots that are severely overgrown, and wanted to change the shape a little bit. I left a tree in full leaf with a care person and a month later, I came back to this. So then we wait for next winter.

I think this is what happened to my elm, winter wasn’t all that cold, so it hung on to it’s leaves. Now that spring growth is pushing through, they’re dropping all their old leaves and spring looks like autumn

This is just a drive by shot, hope I can take a beter autumn colour photo before streets get cleaned up.

So strange, Kevin,
land of half my ancestors and I can't read a word of Chinese.:)

Yes, the elms here do the same, and it must be a survival adaptation.
Still hitting high sixties at night.
The Siberian cold front, must be very angry.

I think the English are calling it ----------- The Beast from the East.o_O:eek::eek::eek:
Thanks for the look.
Good Day

If you let an s-curve elm grow wild, it will want to weep. Keep that in mind ;)

When I got it, some branches were wired downward already, which I thought was odd. And I see with the new spring growth, it grows in all directions horizontally where my trident makes upward whips.

Suppose I should post a new pic, I’ll take one in the morning. It’s already 11pm here in the Middle Kingdom
