Oh my, that is not good. But I'm glad that it's not so bad that you'll loose anything but hopefully progress of this year. Please keep us posted, you know how much I love this one...

Nice to see it produces good needles and that the needle cast is under control. September here is the most important month to treat.

Just curious ...
Do you have native pines in your yard/area and do they commonly have needle cast problems,
or is this a case of a 'non-native species' susceptibility to your native pathogenic fungi?

I'm pretty sure I've seen some Virginia pine volunteers in my yard with needle cast. It was a few years ago, though. I'll see if I notice any more when I can spend a little more time out there this weekend.

Repotted today, and into clay King with added pumice. It's been in a turface mix since I first reported it, but I upgraded to a larger granule sized mix because it's health is officially in question. It's lost 3-4 small branches in the last year and I need it to regain the vigor it once had. The second picture was taken after the latest few dead branches were removed. The good news is that there are strong candles pushing here and there, and I actually like the lighter canopy the dead branches inflicted on the design;)

Boy I'm glad we don't have that needle cast shit down here. It's horrible! Very nice little tree. With the long needle issue, you might try putting it on a leaner diet. Almost a starvation diet. They can easily handle 1/3 of the food a Black pine should receive and about half the water. They show their best character when treated mean. You will get finer and more detailed branching. Repot less often also. Once every 4 years or more is ok even if the roots are spiralling around the bottom of the container. Of course you need to keep on top of it's health, you can't just forget it. The colour of the needles will tell you. Doing this will negate the need to de-candle after a while.

Thanks Michael. If you look back through this progression thread, you'll see pictures of this tree with short, tight foliage with a fairly ramified canopy. In fact, this one buds back so well, it becomes excessively congested and needs to be aggressively thinned every few years, but mainly in the upper canopy. The needles are long because this one was only partially de-candled last year and I continued to feed it all growing season long as I really wanted to pump it up. Same reason for the repot. I wasn't planning to do it this year, but it's declining health forced my hand. This is going to be another convalescing year for this one, and hopefully we'll start more aggressive work in a year or two.

Copper based spray? Do you cover the soil? I'm wondering if one of my Pines has needle-cast. Could something as silly as in-advertently breaking needles give a false impression of an infection?

Thanks for any reply you can offer! Have a great day!:)

FWIW, Peter Warren told me about the same thing; they look their best as bonsai when they are treated a bit more severely; less food and less water, and less repotting. He even recommended planting them mounded up (gasp!) so air could flow better through the raised soil mass. When they get babied, they get fat and happy like JBP.

I have gradually killed 3 of my 4 JRP. 2 due to a bad combination of Brussel's soil and my watering regime, and 1 seedling froze to death at 17 degrees this winter. The remaining, larger seedling next to it is fine. I'm working on making it fat and happy for a while in an Anderson flat before training begins.

The bark and trunk movement on your JRP are very nice Dave. This one always seems bigger than it is.

Copper spraying prevents but doesn't treat needle cast but prevents it, and yes, trauma to the needles can resemble it. I've become much more proactive with prevention, so I'm applying clearys granular to many of my pines and I'm using Daconil every few weeks as the candles extend.

I went back thru and saw you mentioned daconil/clearys. Long thread! Imagine if your using a granular application, I needn't worry about exposing the soil to a Copper spray.

As I think about it, neither of the products you mentioned are copper based, is that accurate?:D:D

Good to know that this is on the mend. And great info about JRP, I'll take a look at my feeding regime with mine now. Is the recommendation to feed less all around or even before decandling as well?

I've used copper spray on this one and others, mainly my junipers, for years...sometimes I've protected the soil and other times, I haven't. I suspect that unless you're severely over spraying your trees to the point that the copper solution is running down the trunk and/or profusely dripping off the foliage, it's really a non issue for your trees.

Just finished needle plucking this one...

I don't think you did it right. Dormant buds at the base of needles have been removed, maybe try snipping with very small scissors next time.

Bummer, we all try to keep our trees safe, some kind of something seems to happen to most of us eventually. Sorry to see that.

That’s not funny!

So sorry!

Did you new acquisition make it unharmed?
Yes! By the grace of God, I moved a bunch of trees, including that one onto the ground before the snow started. It's sitting on the ground, in the snow under a bench, wondering what the hell just happened.
