After hearing about American Bonsai as a new bonsai tool and equipment vendor, I was excited to see them at the Golden State Bonsai Federation show this year for the first time. They had a large booth, professionally staffed, with an extensive tool selection. I have to admit that between Thursday and Sunday they sold a lot of tools - coming back on Sunday I was lucky to pick up the last pair of narrow bonsai scissors that they had to offer.

Their web site: American Bonsai
They are physically located in Sarasota, FL, and offer local pickup to save on heavier products (like soil)

First a little background. The company has a background in developing and producing parts for the motorsports industry. Several years ago the owner received a bonsai as a gift, tried to purchase some bonsai tools, and was dissatisfied with the experience. He was surprised to learn that no one was making bonsai tools in the U.S. Recognizing a business opportunity, he set out to create a high quality line of bonsai tools and products to meet the needs of the U.S. market, with as much as possible produced in the U.S. When American Bonsai launched their business in 2013, 30% of their products were made domestically. Today 75% of their product line is.

I was very impressed with the professionalism of their business. They had extensive promotional materials available at the booth, and offered a range of support that should appeal to the bonsai community including:
(1) a 30 day no-questions-asked money back guarantee on all tools
(2) a five year unconditional warranty on product issues that provides for tool repair or replacement during the warranty period (for the original purchaser)
(3) a lifetime warranty on "select items" - though I could not easily determine which items were covered by the lifetime warranty

The tools appeared to be of high quality. I am not a metallurgy expert, but the tools felt heavy-weight, well constructed, with tight hinges that moved smoothly, extremely sharp edges, and precise construction. The pruning scissors I bought today I used this afternoon on a variety of tasks, and was very happy with their performance. I am somewhat of a stickler when it comes to pruning scissors and expect the tips to be needle sharp, and for them to close perfectly. My new scissors performed perfectly in that respect.

In addition to the product warranty, they offer some other interesting services:
(1) For every tool that is purchased, they make a donation to American Forests (the non-profit) to plant a tree in the United States. Additionally, they make an annual donation to plant 500 trees.
(2) They offer discounts for clubs (as well as retailers).

ab3.jpg

Though their focus is clearly on tools, they offer a wide range of tool accessories like tool rolls, tool sharpeners, tool oils and cleaners, etc.

They also offer a full line of aluminum and annealed copper wire. They have an interesting wire buy-back program where they offer $3 per lb for aluminum or copper wire bits and pieces (in 10 lb lots). It sounds like a good program in conjunction with their club wire discounts!

Finally, they have an extensive line of soil products that (depending where you live and what is available in your market) may be a great solution if you can't find a specific aggregate for your soil mix. They offer various clays, slates, lava, shale, etc. Pricing is $45.50 for most products per 5 gallons, and includes Continental U.S. shipping if your order is at least $99. If you BYOB to their facility in Sarasota, it sounds like all their aggregates cost $25 per 5-gallon bucket.

My impression was very favorable. Everything seemed extremely professional, from their products to their informational material. Pricing was extremely competitive, with their tools priced well below what Japanese lines of stainless steel would cost. I am very happy with my new scissors (after one day of use). I look forward to more great news from them in the future!!

They looked pretty good, very sharp and with a good feel in the hand. Couldn't get the exact grade of SS but they are 400 series, it probably depends on the tool also.

I love their tools. I bought a wire cutter at the convention last year in Sacramento and a branch cutter this year to replace my masakuni one that chipped after 35 years of use. I'll let you know if this one lasts that long....

I also bought one of their 3 tine root rakes. It looks very sturdy and useful.

On the site, it lists local pickup as an address in Altamonte Springs (a suburb of Orlando). I'm not sure if the soil is located at a different location or not, but I thought it was worth pointing out.

I am fortunate to be a 15 minute drive North to them. They are in Orlando (Alta. Springs), the mention of Sarasota must be an error as everything they sell is in one location only. Great service great products.

I highly recommend their tools. They are both lightweight and sturdy. We have been using them for a year at the International Bonsai Arboretum and they have proved durable. My only complaint is the scissors. Where the metal end on the handles there is a gap that can pinch. I would like to see that gap welded soul is. Other than that they pass muster.

View attachment 166309 I've been using the American Tools for a couple of years and like them. In fact, I took them for my demo in Taiwan for the BCI & ASPAC Convention and introduced them to them to my audience. Over 1,000 registrants from 58 countries attended the event.
Those large Masakuni wire cutters look really nice! You must have had them a while because I've not seen any constructed quite like them before.

I met the owners at one time and had an excellent instructive discussion on metals and their approach to tool design and balance. Okay....I was also totally fascinated with the technical drawings used for cutting and shaping tools. I liked their approach to random testing of tools. Good people that know the products they sell.

Interestingly, they did not cut down other products or manufacturers but spent their time and pitch focused on the qualities of the products they manufacture and sell. Mighty fine people.

I bought branch cutters and the best, balanced stainless steel chopstick ever....my favorite chopstick for picking around and twirling between my fingers while thinking. Inspired twirling. Next is root cutters.

Root cutters are harder to twirl.

I'm ambivalent about the tool that I got from them a couple of years ago. Bud scissors blade chipped 60 days after I bought the tool - dropped it--which will chip Japanese tools tool Just that I've dropped Japanese shears many times over the years. Never had a blade chip on those-might be I've just been lucky.

I'm lazy and haven't bothered to return them.

In the past they have run a 20% off everything sometime during fall/winter.
I have been buying 2 tools per year from them since I start bonsai a couple years back. For the quality and price these tools are good for my meager needs.
The 99$ free shipping has allowed me to get many gallons of soil components over the last 3 years. You should still sift a bit but very little fines are present in the inorganic components.

I have yet to have anything but a good buying experience with these guys.

American Bonsai has asked me to test their tools. Together with Jennifer Price we started right away with big American hornbeams at Hidden Gardens, south of Chicago. The first impression is very good. Read more in the future as we work with the tools.

I have quite a few of their tools for about two-three years now and I love them. I had an issue with a pair of scissors so I called them over the phone and they were able to help me over the phone. It's one thing to like the tools it is another to like the personnel as well.

I just ordered a few tools from american bonsai, and some from kaneshin. It will be interesting to compare the two after using cheap made in china carbon tools for a few years.

So far I’ve been very happy with my American Bonsai tools too. I got the narrow concave cutters, the narrow wire cutters and the large size concave spherical cutters. I did get a cutter from Tiny Roots too for comparison.

What I appreciate is how many more affordable options are out there today in the way of tools. 20 years ago you only had a few options...from expensive to VERY expensive. So many companies who are making pretty good tools now.
