I just got a Japanese Beautyberry seedling that's is going to need the trunk bent to give it some movement. It's only about 1/4 inch thick, so I figured bending it in the spring would be the best. Would I treat it like a conifers (wrap it in raffia, then wire)? Or is it better to fertilize the crap out of it to get lower branching to cut to?

Put the wire on before buds open. Be careful, buds are easy to knock off. You can wire now if you want. General wire for deciduous info. I have no direct experience with callicarpa.

They should bud back well, you could just chop it low, let the change in direction of the new leaders be the movement. Up to you. Both ways work.

If you chop, wait until after leaves develop, and have extended and hardened off some. Up here that might be early July. In your area might be earlier.

Wait for the tree to tell you it’s ready. Once you see buds start to turn green, swell, and start to extend the energy from the vascular system has sent energy upwards in the tree. That’s the best time to repot most any deciduous tree.

Also right now when the buds are starting to show is a good time to wire ?

On all species I generally wire before new growth pushes, or after it has hardened off. There is a lot of water pushing right now that increases the chances of tearing and breaking branches.

This is an excellent time to create jin because the bark peels off like butter!
