Man this tree always looks like some kinda monster reaching for it's prey! You have acquired some beauty trees, and now pairing with pots. Good times!

Nice tree....excellent wild-looking character....and a great Bonsai pot to put it in. Hopefully you’ll post when that time comes that you merge the pot and tree together.

Will you be thinning out, pruning, the foliage? If yes....try to capture some before and after photos...progressions of the thinning. I'm interested in learning from what you do.....potting....root pruning.....root tying....pruning.

This tree is all about growth! I'll apply fertilizer, prune dead branches, remove crotch growth, and hopefully style or pot the tree this year. TBD.

Don’t rush it into a pot. How long since collection?

You may need to downsize the box before using the pot.

Entering the 3rd or 4th year post collection.

We are making the repot decision based on the health of the tree. It maybe we style first or wait another year.

We are going to make all the decisions based on the health of the tree.

August 4-5th with Bjorn.

Also have another larger pot

I need larger pots to establish my larger collected trees in 2018/19.
Large pots....my problem is the opposite of yours.

My problem is a shortage of smaller medium size...but I’m working on that....slowly....and with more thoughtful care now. At some point I starting picking up larger, medium large, Japanese pots from the Yamaguchi Nursery in Los Angeles whenever I visited the fabulous people there (the older Mrs Yamaguchi was wonderful). I was thinking in my early years that big pots were always required....lots of roots....then learned trees roots were supposed to be pruned....and my trees won’t be that big anyway. Oh well....lessons learned.

I agree with @Adair M .....downsizing the box may be the next steps....that’s what I’d do anyway....before buying a pot.

I just guessing.....that’s a heavy tree to move around.

I'll be working on this tree with Bjorn or Mauro Stemberger this upcoming year. Several of my trees are on the larger size for Bonsai. Some where between 3-5 ft. I'm sure I'll use this pot at some point.

Here is a before photo of the tree

Here is the tree late fall

My focus is horticulture first for my trees.

I'll definitely follow Bjorn or Mauro's lead.

Thank you everyone for the advice.

Yes moving this tree is terrible. I'd guess 150-200 lbs.

Whoa! Heavier than I thought. That is excellent new growth on the tree. You’re doing things right....and seeing the results.

It will be fun and interesting to see what you all do with the tree. Keep posting please.

Hi Chicago1980,

Did Mauro recommend you to do foliar feeding with Superthrive? Alot people said Superthrive is snake oil but Mauro is using for foliar feeding. Thanks

Mauro does use super thrive at certain times with trees. I have not found this method strong in my area due to Climate and high humidity.

Are you using Biogold and fish fertilizer for your RMJ? The growth is very impressive.

I use biogold, roughly 10-14 hrs of direct south sun, I rotate the trees every 4 weeks, and water.

I also follow the foliage management of Ryan Neil on Bonsai Mirai. Time of year strategy.

Is that the technique of cutting leggy branches and underneath foliage around June to force back buds? Thanks Chicago
