I humbly request your suggestions for this big elm I am hoping to find a pot for. It is a new step for me to have trees that I need to figure out what type of pot fits them best. I know many here are knowledgeable on this subject, and would love to hear from you! .elm (1) (17).jpgelm (1) (18).jpgelm (1) (19).jpgelm (1) (20).jpgelm (1) (21).jpgelm (1).jpg

Some simple guidelines for an upright tree are
  • depth same as trunk thickness
    • deeper may be necessary for the species, but will tend to make the trunk appear to be thinner
  • smooth corners or ovals or round for 'feminine' trees with smooth curves versus sharp corners for 'masculine trees with sharp bends
  • width smaller, but nearing the width of the canopy
    • narrower tends to make the composition feel unstable (i.e., like it might tip over easily)
  • feet at the pot corners is generally preferred
  • glazed pots for deciduous versus unglazed for conifers, generally speaking.
    • light/bright colors to draw attention to the pot
    • contrast with the dominant foliage color (mono-chromatic compositions are boring)
Dramatic/artsy effects are made by violating these 'rules'.

I suggest that you spend a little time looking at pix of similar form bonsai that you can find on-line to get a sense of bonsai conventions to help you select a pot for your tree.

People still use pipes to smoke? I thought it was all about vaporizers these days...

@Wilson , Youngbear's (whose name wouldn't link for me) advice is spot on concerning matching style of pot for style of tree. And your tree has a nice, feminine feeling, but the species is not too feminine. I think it would pair well with a rounded rectangle with a dark glaze, or unglazed. The dark glaze would give it a feeling of being grounded, which should compliment the open airy feel of the tree.

From a horticultural standpoint, I would think you would want a to put your plant in a transition contain for a year or two. The pot it is in now is fairly narrow and deep, and elm roots tend to be on the thicker and stiffer side. I would look for something a little deeper than 1/3 the current depth and 2-3 inches wider on each side. Then in another couple of years, you can look for something 2/3 to 1/2 as deep as that container and a couple more inches wider.

Thank you for such a thoughtful detailed explanation. I agree 100% that it needs a transition pot, from the 2 gal nursery pot. I do love unglazed ceramics, but I have a lot to learn about the dynamics between trees and pots.

This is a tranny tree for me....
Masc and Fem.
Penis and Vagina.

Id like to see it in a rounded corner rectangle, or a strong Oval. Ahem.....

With this canopy....I'd like to see it in a WIDE ass pot, to have some negative space at one side.

Or, tighten in the canopy and save $100 dollars on a pot!
But I like her WIDE!

Something like these may work after a pretty ruthless root reduction.....but I'd probably play a cool hand on this one as @Stan Kengai mentioned. How long in the trainer? Could be a mess in there. I'd try to fix as much as I could at the next repot and use something a bit deeper than showpot depth. These two probably ain't even two inches deep!!

Like this tree, silky moves! One/two branches in the crown gettin' a little chunky, though.
Gonna' be a nice one, good find/growing!!:)

Thanks Lance! I know the reduction this year will be an adventure, definitely a two step situation. I am trying to keep up with managing this trees vigor, I don't have any other big deciduous.

This is a very nice tree, I love the feel it has. So graceful and airy, and the branching is very good. I would go shallow as you can with this as you transition it. I would try a namako type glaze, they are dark enough to ground a tree, but have wonderful visual interest as well.

Thanks Judy! That means a lot coming from you, I have always adored your deciduous trees! I will look up the namako glaze.
