I have my eye on a shishigashira Japanese maple. She will let me have it for $100. Seems like a decent buy to me.

All of my maples are standard variety JMs. I've always avoided some of the fancier cultivars because of bad grafting. This one seems either on it's own roots, or well grafted and matured sufficiently to make the graft hard to see. It might be the ridge right where the truck flares is an old graft, but it is natural enough to not bother me. It has a very girthy trunk, as you can see. The nebari would need some work over time.

So, thoughts? Should I grab it while I have a chance?

Landscape nursery out here would ask $300, and get it fairly easy. Bonsai nursery? Close to double that!! But might be a bit tougher sell as I assume it's grafted and the roots need a complete makeover.

I'd probably use it as a parent tree and try to propagate a bunch of trees off of it.

$100? In bonsai, that ain't all that much these day's!!!:D:D:D:D:D

Good cultivar for Bonsai, purchase with confidence.....but whim works too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!o_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O

Agree with Lance, plant it out in the yard and layer a shishigashira forest of that...

I'd get this tree. Airlayer as much smaller branches, and then graft them back on at the lower portion of the trunk. I'd use the trunk that has more movement. The other with the big scar doesn't look so interesting. Needs some surface root work too.

Amen... @LanceMac10 I was gonna be worried about a graft....
But a trunk that thick in a Reggie Nursery here is $700 easy.

Late!

I just bought it! Lolol

Godo you got it. Now: Layer stuff off, and sell the layers for 100 bucks each once established with nice rootbase :)

Only if some of the branches can be made into trees with relative ease. These things grow painfully slow even for a japanese maple. I dont think you would want to risk trunk chopping it either. So its airlayers of the branches. I made the same mistake except i bought one of the same caliper for 300. Its really only good for airlayers. I took one off and then decided it will be a garden tree. Not worth the effort

That is an interesting option. They grow so slow though i wonder if you could graft it and have it take before the graft died. It calluses very slowly even in the ground for me. Thread graft probably safer
