Ohsoyoung the ugly mis trimmed Mugo pine is alive and doing fine! It’s showing spring growth starting. My wire job is poor but functioning to change shape of tree. If the horrendous scares regrow bark I’ll be happy with this little guy. I’ll see what happens as spring continues to come super early to Utah. B6FEF770-01FE-4EDF-BA81-7BAEC1F5454F.jpeg

I like the stand. The pine would benefit from a bigger pot to speed the process. When was it repotted?

What is your future plan for the style of this tree? Right now I don't really see a path forward.

I see a path forward. Just letting it chill as is. May cut it down to the bottom branch in a few years. Don’t want to take top off now as those little branches are helping it stay alive. Not to concerned if it doesn’t fit in a catagory. It’s my tree. I’m having a good time with it. Just like my yamadori. Not many like the sage but I think they are great276AC1E9-2658-4818-982E-CD6B7A40BE20.jpeg

Few weeks ago. I just kept brushing top layer of dirt down till it was small enough to fit in a pot. I left old dirt and roots as is since it’s been living like that in the garbage area of a nursery here in SLC.

If you are going to cut the top of anyway.. Ten take all the wire of th top. It is doing you no good, and the tree will respond better if you give it a bit of freedom. Also.. I do not understand the bonsipot. Are you not trying to develop this tree? Then give it legroom. It is the only way to get things to grow strongly. And without strong growth you will not get the development you need to make this into something reasonable.

Weren't we all beginners at one time? Or did we just wake up one day knowing how to do this.

If this tree were mine,I would slip pot it into a colander in order to get it cranking along.
Then in a year I would consider cutting it down to the bottom branch, tilt it over and maybe try an informal semi cascade.
You don't hear the term informal cascade very much. It's a cascade style without the little tree growing up above the cascading branch. It's just the cascading branch.
This way you are working with the little bit of reverse taper it has at the bottom instead of fighting it.
I would try one of them virts things but I don't have the technology. Here's a picture of what I'm getting at though.20180218_082924.png

Every now and then one comes to me. Not often but it still happens.
The reason I thought of it is because I have a Scots pine that's sort of similar. No inverse taper but it has a long low branch with a long space up to the next one.
Vance says that it's always best to try to make make do with what you have and to make the smallest believable tree possible out of it.
It works for me.

I get what your saying about the pot. I wired the top down

thats the plan but for now I’ll leave it in ‘the dab’ style so it gets some energy from the upper Pom poms.

This tree really needs two threads? Seems like you've put a lot of stress on it in a short amount of time...wiring, rewiring, cutting, repotting.
Ohw but it does. This will be the best tree on this site etc. Didnyou not read the other thread!? :)
