I've owned this California Juniper for 20 or so years. It was originally collected by "Mr. California Juniper", Harry Hirao in (I'm guessing) the late 1970's. My first sensei, Bob Kato bought it from Harry. Bob never worked on it, and after He died in the mid 1980's I worked on it for his widow for a couple of years.. She decided that cash was more useful than the tree so I bought it.

No carving has been done on this tree. The wood is all natural, except for some jins at the top which were broken to shorten the tree and improve the apex.

The height from the pot rim is 41 inches.

Not long after I posted the last image of the juniper, I decided to repot it into this entirely different style pot. I think it gives it somewhat of a landscape appearance. The pot measures 37.5x16 inches. Even though it has just a fraction of the depth of the last pot, the tree conti9nues to thrive.
The pot originally belonged to my first Sensei, the late Bob Kato who passed in the mid 1980's.

Thanks for your comments, guys.
I posted the same image on another site. One of the comments was that the dead wood was too white. I explained the whitness was the result of flash photography. I took another picture of the trunk in natural indirect light to show the real gray shade of the wood. I add a water soluable black ink to the lime-sulfer to try for a more natural appearance.

Nice tree Mike,

I think I've seen it before. Do you have any plans of styling the canopy?

That's why I don't like to use a flash. I love indirect light because the subject is looked more natural.

I like to see foliage pads in layers (cloud effect). Probably because of the position of camera, I didn't see it. Could you please post another picture with camera in lower position? Very nice tree indeed. Bonhe

Very nice tree

Actually no...damned beautiful tree indeed. The design plus the relationship of tree and pot works very well too.
