Saturday on noelanders i bought this small zelkova nire i bought it because i saw a good informal upright tree in there

Also were does nire stand for?
As the buds are already swollen up
It does need to be repoted soon but also means i need to give it some extra winter protection
i hope to find a decent nebari :D

It wil need some pruning the top has to go and some branches too

Nice little tree!
So glad I could not make it. Saved me from buying trees if I now see the trees people brought home!

Cork bark Chinese elm.

Winged and Cork are not the same species. The tree in that thread clearly has wings. The one in this thread also does not look like cork bark.

Here is a couple of Smoke's cork barks for reference:

It takes 6 years to develop bark. This one is young. Seeing the growth habit and the base of the trunk (close-up without moss might help) I would think it is cork bark elm (mistakingly called zelkova nire in bonsai land). It has a nice start no matter what species.

Very nice start for a fantastic rootbase. A bigger pot might speed things up if you really want it to flare. Since the species is so strong it should be full in no time.

Yes i was thinking the same later but i aint going to change the shoes again there is always next year!

Hi,

Nice little tree, congratulations.

IMO It is Ulmus parvifolia var. nire-keyaki. You have an article here click, click (Sorry it is in Spanish, but photos are quite good)

I purchase one some time ago
laos3.jpg

I let it grow (no cork bark in new growth)
nire1.jpg

and I made an airlayer
nire6.jpg

Well, in fact, I did five airlayers
elm22.jpg

And after one year growing by its own
pumi23.jpg

I hope corky bark will appear sooner or later, but I am quite sure that one day will appear.

Again, congratulations for your new tree, and good luck with the cuttings

Greetings form Spain.
