It’s just 1.5 mm aluminum wire to protect the bark. It flakes off easily if you accidentally rub against it. Easy to do when you’re removing wire.

Thought maybe you'd super glued the plates. Which I've done. A little dab here and there.

All the grafted shoots are growing well too. I hope to reduce the length of the branches to some of the interior grafts. It’ll probably be another year of two before I can shorten to the new apex. I did thin the existing apex significantly in preparation for replacing it eventually.

Something to think about. I’m 7 years into this rehab project. It’ll be another three of four before I can show it. I wonder what i could have grown from seed in that 10 of 11 years?
True, but the opportunity to work on the skills associated with changing a mature tree would have been missed. Nice work and progression.

IIRC, you've done got some seedlings already 3 or 4 years down the road, another 3 or 4 will tell. If not, the 6 year contest that you've entered will answer the question. I expect this tree (though quite nice ✔) will prove to be just one of the 'training wheels'. Foliage will never be where you want it, until you put it there. Its clear that you can do it anytime.

Ala 'Dirty Harry', the question, punk, is can you make a trunk?
I think this is the difference in starting from seed/seedlings.

They’re all training wheels oso! We can all read a recipe from a cookbook, but there are only a few good chefs.

It’s hard to say from the picture but could a more bunjin styling be possible?

Hi DJ. Might be possible, but it’s difficult to pull off convincingly, especially with modest material. I think I’ll stay on the path toward an informal upright, but a shorted apex and branches about 1/2 the length they are now.

What you could have grown from seed in 10 or 11 years would never have that bark on it yet! Maturity takes much longer then 11 years.

Great day working with Danny Coffey and a big day for the Dwight Way pine.

Old apex - gone.

Pretty sassy. Doesn't even look like the one you started with. Thanks for sharing.
