This came out of my woods today. It was chosen for the root spread. Last spring I undercut the upper most roots completely off and packed the cuts with long fibered sphagnum. Then put recycled bonsai soil on top of that and covered with leave. Roots filled up that soil mass in a little over a month using the energy from the rest the 16' tree. I did haul water a number of time to keep it from drying out during s dry spell we had in late summer. I wish I had made my cuts a little closer to the trunk....next time.;)
Today was just a matter of pushing it over, cutting the lower remaining roots that weren't cut last spring and chopping the top. There are a few buds at the base of the trunk already to help it start pushing. Just what I need..... another project.

wow that method seemed to work out perfectly. that's a nice fatty. awesome pot. where can I get a pot like that? I too collected one similar 4 days ago, not quite as big as that one though. I used DE, Pumice, bark, and tree tone for my soil mix. what did you use? are you going to give it any fertilizer anytime soon? looking forward to seeing how this one develops.

Very nice landscape and pond peeking thru there... Would you care to share more photos of your place? I see a good looking bonsai in the distance as well...;)

I'll probably be dead by the time this is developed. I just can't help myself. No fert....roots can't absorb it now. Growstone and medium akadama, coarse peat, hort. charcoal. I really like the Growstone....a lot of air in that stuff, especially good when the akadama turns back into mud. Recycled pot, can't remember where I got it.

Thank you for noticing Judy. I've been working at it since 1983. Posted some photos before in different threads, just not a bunch in one place. I guess I get a little self conscious. It's a very different place after those two nasty winter in a row. Here's a few.

Heavenly.
Just wonderful, it must give you a sense of tranquility to be at your home. Although it looks like a ton of work, property can really be time consuming and backbreaking! Great job, and your conifers look very happy.
What did your winters take from you? We are loosing all our ash trees, so I know how that can be.

Oh, and BTW, you have nothing to be self conscious about! :)

Thanks Judy!!! The work is overwhelming......I use bonsai as an excuse not to weed. I take lots of ibuprofen this time of year. The trees I lost were heartbreaking...many were going to be bonsai but got away from me in the fog of having a career. Great stories of where they came from or who gave them to me. This is a corylus contorta.....I found the board I had put under it to make the root spread out for putting it in a pot. Its the one in last photo, in front of the house. I sawed some of it up into boards

Oh my, what an amazing tree. Hope you are able to find good uses for that wood to keep the tree with you. I know a lot of us can relate to that whole career thing, it gets tough sometimes. I'm going thru a very intense spring schedule, very little time to even check in on them.

I thought I would make a stand or two from it but I can't stand woodworking anymore:(. That why I started making pots.

Superbly beautiful. Love the serenity of it. It makes all the hard word worth the while.

What a spectacular garden! I love the spacious feel! Although my garden is much smaller and younger, I DO appreciate the work it takes to maintain it at the level of yours! Good stuff!

This is a disease that is attacking Amercan beech in northeastern OH and northwestern PA Beech leaf disease is not understood if its viral or bacterial. They say European beech can be effected.......maybe.

Hopefully this doesn't spread to your other beech. I sure do wish they would figure this out so we know what we are dealing with, very interesting disease for sure.
