Update!
This tree pretty much came back from the dead! It has grown vigorously since it sprung back to life. I had already pruned and wired it two times this season and today I decided it was time for another wiring session.
This is where I chopped the dead part of the new leader. The upward growing branch to the right was a second potential leader. I should have cut it when I knew the 'first leader' was healthy and growing strong. It's creating an ugly bulge... I'm going to cut it at the end of next winter.
Brought the tree inside. Waaaay to hot outside right now! Halfway done pruning and wiring the lower branches.
Leader is left untouched. The second one is cut back. I figured it would bleed alot if I cut it back all the way to the trunk right now...
It's amazing how vigorous these trees are! Now I regret not cutting back more a couple of months ago. That way the branches would've forked closer to the trunk. It's not too bad in some parts of the tree though. I'm happy I got these results in one growing season (or half a growing season?). I'll certainly have to keep this in mind next year!
The end result for now. Some of the lower branches still need to grow thicker, so I left them to grow. More up top, I either tried to cut back to a fork, or cut back more drastically in order to promote backbudding.
(Try to ignore the bar branches...)
Happy with the results so far! I can't wait to repot it next spring.
Any feedback is appreciated I'm still learning and I'm totally new to this species. Also, any ideas for a training pot next year?
