i started my bonsai hobby the year before collecting yamadori. interesting times those were. wanted a few nice trees that weren't from the area so i went online and bought this guy and a dawn redwood from Brussels Bonsai. i got a Japanese tree now! I'm really doing bonsai! lol
once i could see the tree i cut off some stuff i thought i didn't want. the roots were so damn ugly to me i knew thats where i needed to start. even Theodore couldnt stand to look at them.
Very nice start to a magnificent tree.
I think this is the way to do it....start young.....keep cuts small, take your time and build from the nebari up.
Well done so far, my friend.
thanks guys. yeah, right after taking these pics for future reference i went ahead and covered the roots. like robertb said im looking to develop more ramification in the root spread. i dont like the pancake style though. time to grow it out again and get that trunk swaying in the wind.
I like your kotohime. I have a five and a half footer in the back yard (part of the landscape - my dad planted it years ago). I can't wait to air layer it this spring.
my 5-year-old koto hime trees are starting their 3rd summer in my hands. it is a cultivar that very reliably back buds and pushes leaves all over from what i've seen. Very useful for introducing movement to it's otherwise straight branches! Love the cultivar!
how thick if your base at the moment if you don't mind me asking? I'm curious to follow up with you in a year to see if the chop slowed down trunk thickening. I'm wondering if the prolific budding will lead to a quick recovery
