Hi all! Been awhile since I have posted... hope everyone is well!
Have a quick question about the progress on my MC.
So 2 years ago I made my long awaited trunk chop and selected a leader... and last year I made my angle cut. (not sure how it went... but I sure looked like I knew what I was doing ;)
So surprised as to how thick the leader became and the amount of callus growing over the cut... but the leader seems to have grown out and made a sharp turn up rather than looking coming straight out of the top. I guess my question is did I not make my angle cut low enough last year?
Thanks for any advice!!!

If Montezuma cypress is as apically dominant as Bald cypress you'll need to keep a close watch on the transition area. That's where BC develop reverse taper due to swelling callus when they're angle-cut too soon. just.wing.it is right, in time it will smooth out and become less noticeable. You just have to get past the next season or two without having to rechop.

Thanks for the reply @Zach Smith... okay then. The waiting game continues. I was nervous I would have to chop already next season. I do hope that funny jog in the leader becomes less noticeable. @Zach Smith, so do I need to do anything to the callus or just leave for a few seasons?

Just keep an eye on it. If it's swelling too rapidly a month or two from now you'll need to cut back the leader drastically to "cool" it off. This can sometimes happen seemingly overnight. At some point, of course, you will need to chop your new leader back to continue building taper in the apex.

Hey all... so here's the "progress" on the Cypress from 5 months ago. Leader is definitely starting to straighten out...but the other day the cut paste fell off and I noticed that the callus on the right side of the cut is not rolling over like it is on the left side. Did I do something incorrect with the cut on this side? Was pretty sure my cut was even. Any suggestions as to how to proceed with anything you see?
Time to repot this one... has shot out of the tub about 2 inches in this growing season!
Thanks nuts!

It looks like you need to shave the "wood" down on the right side. I can see some tissue there, it is just the wood on that side is too high for it to "roll" over. You probably had a little die-back at the very top of the cut on that side. Not too uncommon to happen.
