Photo number 6 appears in one of my favourite books 'Bonsai from native trees and shrubs' by Werner M. Busch page 34. I recognised it instantly from the earlier photos but would never have recognised it from the recent ones. It was good then, but great now.

ive drawn a lot of inspiration from this one on the blog, or just googling Hornbeam images, so i know it quite well. its really coming into its own now and looking much fuller/denser.

Do you defoliate it every year? I love that you have had it 30 years. How many trees in your collection are keepers?

Beautiful. Very nice ramification for a European Hornbeam.
Really magnificent tree ...

I never defoliate this tree, ever.
Walter, do you defoliate (partly?) any of your hornbeams then? If not how you protect density of the crown from dieback from lacking of sunlight? Thanks

I never defoliate hornbeams. The foliage is quite small if the tree was a bonsai long enough. I do nothing. As you see it does not hurt.
