I posted in another thread about how much my bougainvillea had thickened after letting it grow out unrestrained. Here is a before picture (it's the stick in a pot on the left) from last fall:

Here is a couple of updated pics from a couple of days ago:

I bought this from Meehan's Miniatures around August of last year. I am not sure of the exact dates. I should have started keeping track of these things. It was put into a regular 6 inch flower pot initially, but it was quickly repotted into an eight inch bulb pan with a decent fast draining bonsai soil mix. Since then it was grown under lights indoors with not much fertilization. I put it out this spring and started fertilizing and it really took off. The trunk has thickened considerably. Probably not as much as it would in the ground in a climate like Florida's, but I think it's done alright.

Interesting post since I have a bougie myself I want to thicken the trunk up. I read not to put these in large containers...but to go up into 2 inch increments with pot size...your the second one who has said to go larger basically on the pot. I will take that into consideration when I go up again making it larger than the 2 inches I read about...

Am I disappointed it won't be in the cute pot...no...because I will reuse the pot...so not a total loss. :D

Thanks for sharing...you have any idea what the size of the trunk was when you got it...compared to now?

I'd estimate that it was around 1/4 of an inch wide and now it's probably 5/8 of an inch. They seem to like it dry, plus the roots weren't close to the edges of the pot, so I tried not to keep it wet while it was indoors. The soil mix was mostly aggregates with a tiny amount of pine bark. I even got it to bloom inside.

That is awesome! I hope I am as lucky...

wow man looks like it's doing really well. I just picked up a bougie about 10 days ago that looks like yours at the start. Just chopped it and now it's pretty sad looking at the moment lol, but hope it responds as well as yours has. Yours looks like it's doing extremely well.

As a newbie...can I ask what type of soil you are using on yours, as well as how much lighting? I've been taking mind outside during the day but now the temps are dropping (Michigan) so it comes in at night.

It's actually very easy to care for here. It stays outside from about early May till around late October, then it comes inside and stays under florescent lights during the winter and does great.
