Or I may use this sketch. With this one, the tree will show a lot of deadwood with only two small live vein in the front.

Good plans, both of them! If I may say I like the first one (less foliage) the best.

Thanks for your opinion. I also like less foliage. If I decide to follow the plan 2, it will not have much foliage :)

I would consider that your decision will likely be based on the best display of deadwood that can also incorporate live vein emerging from the bottom and varying in form for interest if possible. Thus framing the trunk and focal point. With the foliage tying together and unifying the style. There appears to be enough live foliage and natural deadwood to create several possibilities. Nice piece of yamadori and in good health to proceed. Long healthy extensions very evident. Well done, they do not come out of the ground that way.

Thank you for your comments.

Nighttime temperature goes down to 45 F now. Day length is about 10 h 14 min.
This crepe myrtle is shredding a lot of leaves .79D9158E-9135-4544-9403-4B36F04F77DF.jpeg

This pomegranate is, too. It looks very itchy at this time, but it has to wait for its cared turn! ?

Át this time, I concentrate my work on the junipers. Just brought this California juniper out of its place to start working. It was dug 3 years ago. I put some wires last year. I will do some serious training for it this time !
It is really heavy!

Very nice progress. Interesting choices between front and back. The deadwood on the back side is exceptional, but i lean towards the interest created by the live vein movement and grounding effect on the front. The image will pop when the foliage fills in and frames the tree. The planting angle seems almost perfect already with the trunk flow. Fantastic start. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, with this tree, I had to draw so many sketches to find out which is the best front. I am satisfied now ?, however it is still long way to go!

The tree in post # 768. The first thing to start working is removal of dead needle, all small twigs within 2 inches of branch bases. Then, the outside bark are removed .
These are outside bark. I started peeling off the bark at the top of branch, grabbed its end either by fingers or by wire pliers, then simply pull it downward to the trunk base.
This is a long outside bark stripe

Now look after outside bark remou

This tree obviously has windswept image. It is also needed a lot of carving !

I continued working on tree # 768 this morning.
I made adjustment on the jin which were cut straight during the collecting time.
IMG_9763.jpg IMG_9764.jpg

I used a big root cutter to split the wood
IMG_9767.jpg IMG_9765.jpg

Then used wired pliers to pull the wood downward. Finished.
IMG_9784.jpg

I also removed more layers to expose the hard wood in the areas without live vein,
I like to show you anatomy in one area;
IMG_9779.jpg

I used this thin blade tool to assist me in remove the cork cambium- secondary phloem and vascular cambium. The blade was inserted beneath the layer to separate the layer from below tissue.
IMG_9769.jpg

Then used the thumb to put the pressure on this layer with the blade was still in place.
IMG_9770.jpg
Then lifted the blade up with thumb and pulled downward
IMG_9771.jpg

Piece of tissue was removed
IMG_9773.jpg

With this one hand technique , I could finish my task fast and easy.

Its trunk base with one live vein
IMG_9782.jpg

While working on this juniper, I found the sign of termite infestation.
IMG_9786.jpg IMG_9787.jpg

I used insecticide to spray on the area. I will follow this up few more days. If the problem is still there, I have to inject the pesticide ( I could do that today, but I was so lazy at that time to set it up!)

Thanks for the detailed post. I have a question. One of my Sierra Junipers is very old yamadori with checked deadwood and rotting areas inside the trunk. Cleaning and removing rotting wood has created interior hollows and i am debating which preservative/hardener to use on the interior of the hollowed portion. Have you a preference or suggestion?
I used a solution of Lime Sulphur on two previous occasions but it does not seem to penetrate very well in the interior areas.

Thanks for asking.
I am guessing that you have a lot of humidity in your area, don't you?
I have a big bougainvillea with severe trunk decay due to termite and water. After I removed all the soft dead wood, and injected the insecticide to area. I let it dry for 2 days. Then I use wood hardener to paint on the surface of the cavity. Since then it does not have any more problem. I don't remember which wood hardener brand is, but it is whitish liquid. I mixed some black ink into this liquid, so the color can turn to gray. I hope it will help you.

You are correct, i live in an area that has humid and damp conditions throughout the winter. The summers are often hot and dry for extended periods.
The product i was considering is whitish, that dries clear. I have used it for the base underneath polyurethane finishes. The India ink suggestion is a good one for the aged appearance and i have used that when aging the jin and Shari. There has been no sign of termite activity since it was previously treated and in California.
Thanks for the insight.

The previous carved area has been weatherized very well. I did not use any lime sulfur to treat the carved area.
