@markyscott @Adair M I have a couple of pots around I could use for next repotting, one deeper than other. If I take the less deep one I believe I would not have enough space for the board as its less than 1 finger deep... Which one would you use?

Greetings!!

Hi Estonio. For trees in training, I tend to use either a wooden box or an Anderson flat (#2405). What I’m looking for is A) symmetrical - I want the roots to be able to extend laterally in all directions, B) wide - much wider than you think to let the surface roots extend and get thick. It’s the thickening and extension of the surface roots that creates nebari, C) shallow - to discourage downward growing roots. Here are some pictures.

Certainly. They’re on the link I provided. Click on the highlighted text - model 2405.

The Anderson flats Scott refers to are approximately 43 cm x 43 cm x 10 cm.

Thanks for the conversion. Actually deeper than my current colander. I will search for something like this.

Thanks a lot both

Hi Estonio and you’re welcome. The depth is deceptive. Most of mine have a thick layer of pumice down and the tree itself is planted on a board on top of the pumice layer. It’s also planted deeper than the final plan. So actual growing space is not the entire depth of the flat. I have a thread called Ebihara maples where I discuss the technique. Hope that helps.

Just after reporting,

I had too many roots growing at different heights. So I have prioritized to fix this problem. Although I did not leave many roots and good year of many thin roots developed are going to the trash. Now I need to compensate a bit pruning the aerial part.

You will see a dramatic improvement in the root system next time you repot!

Thank you @Adair M I hope so, if it first survives :)

In this picture is more visible the problem I had with the roots and this isalready after cutting bottom part about 1,2 inches

I think this season I should let it grow in order to develop roots as much as possible. Then in Fall I could wire some branches and remove some thin ones that I don´t need.

I like the styling you did but this will hinder the trunk thickening.

Let's see how the new apex grows.. Its very normal to replace apex to form the tree even if it will take a bit longer to thick the trunk, it will thick

I understand but I think it would have helped to make the base a bit thicker before changing the Apex.
