View attachment 85129 So, work for me slows down just a bit this time of year, but my kid's extracurricular activities explode as well. Bringing a tree to work will sometimes allow me to work a tree that, unfortunately, won't get touched when I'm actually at home. So, I'm just wondering if anybody else capitalizes on periodic downtime while on the job.
Lucky you I was just thinking about bonsai at work and my boss yelled at me!!!

It needs a root graft and a little age, but it has good bones.

How is this one in the terracotta pot going these days? Did you do any root grafts you any if your JBPs?

I bring a tree to work for viewing once in awhile, the staff enjoys looking at it.

It was re-potted into a pond basket with boons mix last spring and had a root graft placed. Both grew well, and despite a very wet spring, the foliage is a very healthy dark green... so healthy that rabbits pruned it over the winter and killed a few branches, and I'm not sure the graft took. I'm planning to change the front any way, so the root graft isn't as important now with the future front.

I cut a notch in the trunk base where I wanted the roots then introduced the pine seedling after scraping away the cambium on the side facing the notch, then secured with a grafting nail/pin. I suspect I didn't make the notch deep enough... I'll investigate this weekend.

Nice, but the pot made me wince some. But I have been using the old sickle-saw to remove a stubborn tree. This shape can be a bit difficult at "extracation"!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D
Yeah, I was actually thinking about that recently. This one was getting re-potted annually... until this year:oops:. Hoping to build some vigor, I suppose. Anyway, I'm not concerned about the re-pot next year, as young ume roots are very fibrous as opposed to woody and I should be able to easily cut through them with a root sickle. If this was a trident that was allowed to grow wild, I wouldn't feel quite so confident:p.
