Hey everyone. I’ll be in San Diego for 5 days next week and was wondering if anyone knew of a great shop or nursery I could go to, to peak around for supplies or pre bonsai? I’ve really got nothing of the sort in NM and would love to visit a semi legit bonsai nursery. I found a place called San Diego Bonsai Supply online, but wondered if anyone has any experience with them? Or if there is a straight forward nursery/garden center that has great bonsai options? Thanks!!

Not much here in San Diego. I haven’t heard of San Diego Bonsai Supply. Walter Anderson Nursery has some bonsai stuff. Pots, some trees but that’s about it.

If you go to San Diego Bonsai Supply let me know how it is. I looked at their website...kind of lacking, but the pot prices that I saw in the pictures looked reasonable.

Yeah, I certainly didn’t see much. Thanks for the response though. I’ll post on how that bonsai supply is.

How far are you willing to drive? You can get into some Bonsai up in LA if you don’t mind driving a little bit.
I’m willing to make any drive. It’s my wife and 3 kids that would nicks that idea. ?. At the very least I’ll probably go walk a few local nurseries just for a peak.

I was actually in LA about a month ago for a big arts and crafts festival. I had planned on making it to at least 1 spot, but I was in and out in 4 days and basically worked the market the entire time.

I am the Orange County / LA tour guide. But I am not part of the San Diego bonsai scene. The San Diego Bonsai Club is a great group. I would recommend shooting them an email. However, in the past I have noted that all the bonsai vendors they link are up here in OC/LA (or points north - in the Bay area).

If you can drive north... I will happily tour guide. However it is best to come later in the week or on weekends, because some of the nurseries are closed Monday / Tuesday (it is their weekend). If you give me a little advance notice, I might be able to hook us up with a visit to some private bonsai gardens.

Greg. This is amazing. Your enthusiasm for this community and willingness to go above and beyond to provide for the art form is incredible. I’m going to talk with my wife and see if I can pull away for at least half a day. Though I don’t think it’s going to be feasible. We’re meeting family in SD and my kids and wife would prob be a disappointed if I left for even half a day. I will certainly be back to So-Cal at some point and hopefully in the near future, as I’d love to have a beer and chat trees with you. If I can pull off a miracle I’ll get in touch over the next day or so.

Just read through there site. Looks like a few opportunities to see some permanent collections and at least the one nursery in SD. But I’m def going to try and pull away for part of a day.

Made my way to San Diego Bonsai Supply. Small shop to say the least. They’ve got pots (big and small), tools, wire, akadama, and shohin stands and displays. Pot selection was pretty great at least compared to what I have available. I can’t speak to the authenticity of the makers but some were labeled japan and others were labeled China. They had massive pots for both single trees and forests. Glazed and unglazed. I walked out with a yixing semi cascade pot for a spruce I collected and a bag of super hard akadama. Pot was $39 akadama was $28.

Just thought I’d follow up and report what I found. ??4004C81B-62B1-42DC-B32C-5010604EA95E.jpeg68B28E26-D27B-445C-B372-5E37B0A0B5B9.jpeg72AB729A-D558-49EC-A238-81ECF6D58080.jpeg4037C974-8A22-4D75-A015-62FEE0A0D18F.jpeg9CAB65AE-13A7-4702-87E1-6998EC547950.jpegFBE943A5-F084-4F6C-B460-841DBE06DB2F.jpegBA5429BB-28AE-409D-830C-E2D3E3646C59.jpeg37DA2080-4910-4087-8804-DFFC4F4B8885.jpeg

This’ll be the first time buying/using akadama. I’ve always used pumice, DE, bark mix. I’ll prob mix the akadama with the Pumice. Nothing till next season at this point.

The pot selection really was pretty stellar. I could have dropped thousands. A pot for every tree, really. I will say, it was hard to find. It’s connected to a glass and mirror shop and the sign is tiny. But the google directions were on point, it just takes a few looks to spot it.

Pretty interesting seeing a Walter Pall tree on a bag of Japanese soil. They have so many great Japanese trees to choose from any they put that one.

You can call that whatever you wish, but people in California have been using that mix since Boon was in grammer school....or longer. I was using that 36 years ago, and the guy who showed me how to mix it had been using it for probably 30 years or more before that. We have the large Asian population doing bonsai in California hence akadama has been here a long time.

Nobody ever heard of the term "Boon mix" till Adair used it ad nauseum here.
