A big one too.
An Amur maple I picked up last weekend from Ken Smith at The Flower Garden.
It's kind of raw still and needs a bit of work but the basis for a decent bonsai is there.20190818_125112.jpg

That’s a good one, Mike! Based on recent history, though if you don’t build a cage out of hardware cloth that surrounds this one on all sides, The voles will have a field day this winter. That’s a good tree and worth the extra effort to keep it from being chewed on… Good luck!

That ought to survive your climate with some protection. And be a fun tree too
It better take the climate.
It will.
I had a small one for a couple of years.
Voles ate it.

What??? Frary with a maple?? Impossible!

No excuse here Mike. These guys come from Siberia so it should feel like it's on vacation where you are! 😂

Congrats and enjoy!
I've been looking for your Acer Ginnala styled thread.
And if I have questions expect a p.m. Sergio.
Probably more than one.

I'm killing them right now.
I put out some peanut butter mixed with concrete.
I will be getting a bunch of 1/4" hardware cloth to build an actual cage type thing to house the trees in.

The tree has some nice potential mike. Have fun but consider the presentation please. The can size is appropriate but the color scheme does nothing for complementing the pot or tree! Try Guinness ;)
When I did drink I was there for the buzz.
Every Friday it was a case of Budweiser and a fifth of Popov.
Then the bar till closing and if I didn't land in jail it was the same thing the next day.

Good luck with it Mike and remember to post up the Anti VC shelter! I don't even know what hardware cloth is but I'm sure the VC will get to know it well.

I think there is.
It looked like some kind of brick like material in there.
If there is it will only be there until spring.

I'm sure you've seen it but you guys hash up English so much you probably have a different name for it.
It's basically screen but made of heavier wire and with larger holes.
It's used a lot on the bottom of rabbit hutches.

'We hash' wtf lol. You said it's cloth - that's metal. No wonder I was confused - Frary and Maples in the same sentence! I've got one of these on the go too so I'll bookmark this thread - post Winter I want to see a row of VC body bags laid out in a row :)!

I would dig a trench and run the hardware cloth below grade to stop them digging their way in.

A diversionary tactic may be a better approach. Try putting out some caviar and a bottle of fine wine.
