I'm killing them right now.
I put out some peanut butter mixed with concrete.
I will be getting a bunch of 1/4" hardware cloth to build an actual cage type thing to house the trees in.
I’d go even smaller. 1/8 inch.

When I did drink I was there for the buzz.
Every Friday it was a case of Budweiser and a fifth of Popov.
Then the bar till closing and if I didn't land in jail it was the same thing the next day.
Bonsai is a good switch, although it takes longer!
As for the voles. how about a perimeter ditch filled with pea gravel. How deep do thye like to tunnel?

They will tunnel at least a foot.

@M. Frary, I’m not sure how much you need to protect or if it’d work, but rather than dig down, could you lay a layer of hardware cloth down on the ground as a floor and connect it to the walls of the hardware cloth, kinda in a box shape? That’d keep them from coming up through the bottom, right? That’s a really sweet amur.

Thanks and what you've described is exactly what I was thinking of doing.
I need to build a framework to attach the hardware cloth to also.

Beautiful Maple! Just a thought, how bout using a dog crate as your frame? Use a layer of the hardware cloth underneath the crate or attached to the outside bottom. The crates I own have a heavy plastic tray in the bottom as well. You could then attach the hardware cloth on all sides, top and door to the crate.

Great idea.
But I have quite a few trees.
