I helped,remember?
It was in a brick of sand.
I was wondering how it took the move.
We actually went harder at that one than any other I've done.
That's great news Vance!
That's right, that happened when you were here for the show a few weeks ago. It took the move like a champ, I was surprised it took it so well.

M. Frary, have you ever considered collecting jack pines mid-summer (late July/early August)?

I don’t know how cool your summers are (just how cold your winters are haha), but guys who collect up north here say that pines prefer to be collected in the summer, rather than spring or early fall. Once the year’s growth has matured...essentially the same idea as a summer mugo repot.

Though for sure, timing doesn’t matter that much if the soil is so bad as to leave each of these pines bare-rooted upon collection.

That took place about Aug. 10, the weekend of our show.

I am pleasantly surprised as well.
It was in that sand for 5 years!
It goes to show that rushing into removing field soil from collected trees isn't always the right move.
It's going to be a cool little tree.

Oaks tend to prefer collection in the fall...or so I'm told.
I dont do oaks.
The native ones here, red, white and pin are poor subjects for bonsai.
Where winters are mild fall collection is possible.
We've already had temps in the lower 20s at night a few times already.
