Out jeeping today. Remote high Sonoran Desert. Steep rocky climbs and rutted washed out roads...yipee! About 4300 ft elevation. Yes, there is water in the desert and trees with color. New River Canyon.

Saguaro cactus in the background.

What's the tree (non Acer) 8th down with the stripey bark?
The leaves say hornbeam, but that bark? Very interesting trunk. Am also wondering what it is.

Yes its a Korean Hornbeam. I didn't get much colour this year unfortunately. This was it last year:

Yes the bark is really unusual, its been like that ever since I bought it in 2014. Its had a fair bit of work done on it so far including 6 or 7 approach and thread grafts to add interior branches etc.. I'll hopefully be able to cut back to soon.

Great colour - I have a Koreana growing out in my beds but it's primarily yellow in the two seasons I've had it. I'm now thinking I should have got a young turczaninowii as it's got better Autumn colours. I'm now looking to develop trees that more than ever earn a spot on my benches for colour, bark and winter image.

American Sweetgum 2 year ago. This fall a wind storm blew the tree off the table and cracked the pot in half but no damage to the tree!! Ordered a much nicer pot for it. Second is Washington Hawthorne.Have a nice pot for that one to go into as well.

Hey @Drew nice trees. What type of hornbeam is this? That bark is incredible.
Thanks Brian... Its was sold to me as a Korean Hornbeam.

Believe it or not a think I still prefer JBPs partly due to your blog, ebook and posts on this forum! I have over 80 JBP at all different stages of development.
