a Bonsai Snob
As I learned on a facebook group recently..
Bonsai snobs are those people that tell others that what someone is showing are seedlings, and not bonsai (yet). And those people that tell others that not everything growing in a shallow container is a bonsai, and not everything should be tried for bonsai.

Guess I am a bonsai snob by those definitions

As one of the resident new guys, can’t speak to who’s who at this point.

Snobbery is not exclusive to Bonsai, but like excellent nebari…if tended it will flourish.

I work a highly technical job rife with snobbery of toolsets, languages and operating systems. In that world the snobs ( we call them tools/toolsets ) are very simply the ones who have forgotten the patience that was shown them at one point.

The nice thing about my world, the processor does not care about your opinion of yourself, where you trained, etc…it is correct or it is not. No amount of snobbery will make bad code compile.

I appreciate matter of factness and understand the frustration at folks that don’t search before asking about soil for instance.

Glad to be here and TIA for everyones help and guidance.

A bonsai snob is someone who feels so superior, that he/she refuses to help or offer constructive criticism to those with less experience and/or less talent. There are many here with decades of experience, as well as first class trees that still take the time to help, teach and share their experience for the benefit of us all.

Bonsai snobs [though one could just as easily call them ‘tools’] are those who believe:
  • That it’s about ego, or self, or superiority;
  • that how many/how old/how expensive my trees are make me better than you;
  • it’s their right to condescend or patronize newer, less informed members of the community;
  • their stature is determined by how many names they can drop from workshops they’ve taken, or people they’ve studied with;
  • that only following the rules they believe in makes worthwhile trees;
  • that calling someone out to ‘show pics of your trees’ defeats someone else’s question, opinion, or effort;
  • that the anonymity of the internet is a license to be an asshole.

So what's your poi
Bonsai-snob (noun) a person who actually knows about bonsai and upsets others by telling the truth.

I fit this description but do not consider myself a Bonsai snob …
No bonsai snobs here on BN, IMO......

I think this is the problem. That when you get one of these:
Bonsai-snob (noun) a person who actually knows about bonsai and upsets others by telling the truth.
people take it as snobbery, rather than trying to help people learn more.

I do not know of bonsai snobs to be honest. As far as I know, the people that respond onforums and on facebook are all there to try and help people understand that bonsai is more than sticks in pots. But then again.
Guess I am a bonsai snob
