A report was made that led to the deletion of a piece of a post.

Now, posts remain that don't make sense, and can negatively impact good people's reputations.

To protect the reputation of good folks in our community, would you rather the deleted portion be again revealed, so the interaction makes sense?
Or the remaining comments also be deleted?

I always liked that this couldn't happen here, because things never got deleted.
So my vote is an astounding let's prevent this in the first place, and not delete anything, reveal what was deleted.

I appreciate how a locked thread can prevent escalation. It always seemed an honorable means to an end.

Thoughts please.

What AZ said.
Sometimes I am much more stupid than at other times, I am sure I am not alone in that.
so a grace period to correct yourself is nice, but other than that I’ll have to agree with the wizard of nonsense, the pot-man himself, Sorce, our moderator and the font of something or other, and go with locked threads when things get out of control.
See what I mean?

It’s a slippery slope.
i think I would have to delete and warn if it was a racial slur or something just f’d up but I’ve see a lot of personal attacks on here and they stay. On this site was is said has usually stayed.

I have seen such “post fragments”... agreed they are troubling.
I’d rather all the information be available, for the sake of the information, itself.

However, when attempting to “draw those lines” about what exactly should be permitted to be viewed (before OR now), we will undoubtedly run into many ethical or interpersonal dillemas...

🤔 Hmmmmm...

A vote was a GREAT idea, it’s the only way.

I am opposed to deleting posts by others. Free speech is only important when it protects that with which you do not agree. I think posts should be memorialized for all to see. Racial slurs, doxxing, and threats could be edited to censor the word(s), but the content and context should stay. Locking the thread is prudent by that point, and often a good resolution.

A policy to keep all posts should make people think twice about what they say. They’ll expose their character and subject themselves to the consequences of being ostracized or constantly engaged in a battle. Neither is very useful. If they wish to change their tone, they’ll need to clear it up and start acting right.

I remember several posts I’m not proud I made here (bet many of us have)...but they are here and I try to stay above them now.

If you wish to delete your account, randomizing the user but keeping the posts is great. It would be interesting to assign those posts back to the user if he/she returns under a different alias.

The deletion of a piece of a post is censorship . In the interests of freedom of speech and transparency
you should at least leave the info on view with an explanation why a thread has been blocked and also have an option for the offending poster to edit or withdraw and apologise for a comment if it causes genuine offense or harm IMHO

Aw man! I want all the goss like totally yesterday...

No, but I think that if you post something so heinous that someone has to complain then you deserve people to read it and think you’re a dick. As a relative newcomer, this community is generally nice enough to moderate itself and call bull when we smell it.

The only exception I would make to this is if the post runs afoul of a reasonable government's laws. If the post, for example, might lead to seizure of the domain by, again, a reasonable government with proper jurisdiction then I think an argument can be made to take the post down. (Backpage comes to mind as a Web site that left too much user-generated content up as laws changed, and now is permanently down...) However, if the request comes from a government like China, that is notorious for censoring content, then I think nothing should be done.

I oppose the deleting of posts. Even if they are offensive, especially if they are, let everyone see who that person is in all their ignorant glory. There's always the option of the "ignore" function if you just can't stomach some. But deleting them doesn't give the rest of us a chance to form an opinion. C'mon, we're all adults here, or at least mostly..........

Not sure this is the actual question?
Rather than censorship how about transparency, remove the masks and have people known for who they are, rather than who they pretend to be.
I suspect that may have a moderating influence all on its own!
The ignore function works well, however it does not prevent every well intentioned discussion getting taken off the rails to the point that it is no longer worth trying to sort the wheat from the chaff. That can be more detrimental to the website than expletives in my opinion.

I'd rather see A LOT more deletions. This site functions pretty well as a repository for good up-to-date advice. Several times though, I've used the search feature to try and dig up hard to find info only to read through multiple pages of off-topic nonsense, passive-aggressive grand standing, and general sniping without ever finding any real information about the original search topic. These posts are essentially spam and they're a discouraging nuisance. Saving worthless troll posts in order to expose and punish the idiots is giving those people way more power, time, and energy than they deserve.

The ignore function
To be honest, I would have this function scratched from the site. Too many discussions seem repetitive because people have others on ignore and therefor do not know that answer has been given. Or they do not respond because they have put a person on ignore. Nah. Ignoring.. Do it in your head.

So would it then be that people have the option moderate their own threads? If they don’t like it moving off topic they can remove or hide posts so there is a moderated and an un moderated version, for example. It’s a lot of work employing what would become effectively a full time moderator otherwise.

Being someone who has had posts deleted once for being a dumbass,I think it's a good thing.
I haven't always been the cuddly guy you guys have come to know and love.
I used that experience to learn.
And even gained an internet friend ,right Chris? @coh
We both said things we regret that day and have moved on.
Now I don't know exactly who this bonsai dog is nor do I care.
Seems like some recognize him.
And since it seems that I'm in the middle of this(I must just have a knack for bringing out the worst in people) leave the post edited.
Give the poor bastard a chance to think and maybe he'll change a little.
If not he's in for a rough ride.
