Your(just.wing.it) plant looks exactly like Wilson 9/Apple Blossom/Ho-o; kurume-type plant habit with hose-in-hose flowers with more colour at the edges.

Kiwi's flowers are way bigger than yours, judging from the type of azalea. And the leaves are more elongated and folded inward pointing upward rather than spread out in kurume azalea.

Ah, yes, mine is a hose in hose... I see what you're saying now, thanks!

Wilson 9.....I like that. This azalea is now called Wilson, in memory of my kitty cat Wilson R.I.P., who was named after the Phish Character Wilson.

Hi,
Thank you for the information, as I did have doubts.
The picture thing not matching - go me.
Lol, now I can go find my variety 😂😂👍😂🤬. Maybe mine is the Satsuki hybrid.

I can't keep azalea here, and friends that had outstanding specimens bought in the netherlands can't either. Not the right climate apparently.

But i pove to see azalea blossoms, and listen to orange blossoms :

Found this one, oh so cheesy, makes me think of Frank Zappa in his teens, I just love it :

Seriously, so many versions, but Charlie McCoy, and Chet Atkins of course.

I obtained this one this past spring.
Hacked it down and sawed off the roots.....all the roots, accidentally....whoops!
When I realized that I went too far up with the saw, I thought it had no chance of survival.

To my surprise and delight, it grew out a bit and survived quite a harsh summer on the bench.

If it survives winter, I think I'll leave it untouched next year to run wild and regrow some more roots.
Am I reading understanding this right? Did you really remove all the roots and somehow the plant grew new roots from the base and kept on growing? From the base of the trunk?

Pretty sure it had roots coming out sideways from the trunk higher up. I think his assumption was that the roots he was left with were connected through the part he cut off to the main trunk, and he shows the main trunk being sown off in his root picture. But I believe most of those roots actually connected directly sideways to the trunk, not through the piece he cut off.

Yeah, I cut right through the base of the trunk.....accidentally.
It must have had some roots growing off of what is now left of the base.

WOW! That is incredible! Good to know azalea grows roots so well from old trunk. This is really encouraging.

Azaleas will root layer themselves. Low branches that are close to the soil or get covered by mulch will form roots eventually.

What an absolutely beautiful flower this one has. Ive looked around and none of the stock images for nurseries claiming they have this cultivar look nothing like your flower. Except the shootgardening link a few posts up but I can see anything that says they sell this plant.

Oh well, yet another one to add to the never ending list of must have species and cultivars.

Thank you for sharing this!

I thinned this one to 2 after blooming.
Its filled back in and I'm going to trim it again, back to 2. I see some back budding in there that I want to get more light to.

I think this could be a really cool clump some day. I'm gonna leave all the original chops stubs for a long while to allow the new branches to thicken before I grind away.

Time to trim.
