besides I can tell the difference in a photo so I've seen whats there, and you have seen mine, if you have any credibility you could see the difference.
Yeah, I can see it. And it's why I've spent a fair amount of time trying to understand the type of "talk" that comes out of you on this forum.

I have shown in the local Kazari that started out in the Japanese museum in Hanford. I have won $2300.00 dollars for my entries. So far no New Yorkers have entered that either.
What would be the reason for a New Yorker to try to show there? How many people attend? Do they come from all over the country? Seems like a weak comparison.

I think it's important to remember that not everyone is here to make the best trees and be in the art world and show trees at shows. Some people just do this for fun, and the community and of course to learn, but shouldn't have to look past name calling or rough tone.
I think you missed the point...

I'm not sure people are afraid, maybe they just don't want to be belittled. I know personally that I've thought twice about posting my crappy newby photos because of the people on forums who just insult rather than help. But I've actually been really lucky that everyone has been lovely and welcoming, and have provided kind criticism.

I think there's definitely a way to word critiques, and that maybe you don't always word it in the best way, whether that's unintentional or not.

I'm new here and have had a good mooch around the threads. From what I've read I can see that bonsai is your passion - you love it and do want teach your ways to help people improve their trees. Which is think is great, but I do think it's important to consider that the people behind the usernames and photos are human beings with feelings. I'm a teacher, and even though I teach children not adults, I believe that people do not learn through negativity.

Reading through this thread has made me feel relieved that you haven't come across (or wanted to comment on) any of my photos. I'm sure you could offer some really useful info and things to work on, but I'm not sure it's worth the hammering you'd probably give me.

I hope I'm wrong though, because I think this is a brilliant resource and community and I hope to stick around for a long time 😊

If you understand where you fit in you will be here a long time. If your have a few years and you finally get enough confidence, you will post to a thread like this and make your views known. It doesn't change the fact that you said " I know personally that I've thought twice about posting my crappy newby photos because of the people on forums who just insult rather than help.". I am not in that group, I've never seen a tree from you so I feel like your making generalizations about something you have no control of. There is a new thread for you to post pictures of your tree/ trees in. The thread is not there for me or anyone else that doesn't post a picture of a tree to talk in. If I do have something to say it will be by PM, like I mostly do. There are plenty of people that have been given opinion and thoughts on how to help their tree by PM from me. If anyone here would care to really look at the dialog here, the problems at this site are from about a dozen or so people that post no trees and have nothing but shitty things to say. Do the homework you will see.

No I'm aware you haven't commented on anything I've posted, I'm just saying I've seen you say some things to people that I wouldn't want said to me, and it may make people think twice about posting.

Of course I don't know about the main point you're getting at - the people who are 'all talk' and don't post work. I've not been here long enough to see any of that.

"Ignore" is a very useful forum feature. If someone is affecting my vital signs, or spews vile stuff regularly, I use it. Zero harm to them, and it doesn't lead me into the sin of responding inappropriately. Typically, I don't argue with folks on the Internet, anyway, particularly about something (like Bonsai), where I am no subject matter expert. I will debate about issues upon which I have some expertise.

Been there done that....people show their anger when they can't compete. I get it, one has to stay in their lane, and that is hard to do. A place like this without moderation allows the insane to run the asylum. Where do my rights as a contributor start and end? I contribute, and you don't. You don't like it that I want contributions, you feel pressured and you lash out the only way you cam, by calling me a jerk, The answer is simple for most of this forum, put up or shut up. That simple.

Criticism only begets progression if the poster is willing to admit they need help. Otherwise nothing happens and you are OK with that apparently. then the poster you critiqued goes on to call out other peoples work when they have shit. I don't understand how you guts put up with that. I have been at this forum for 15 years, do you think I have not seen everything that has gone on here. This is just more of the same shit. Those that can post do, and those that can't complain. Been like that at BSG, AoB, Talk, Nut, Page, IBC, Gardenweb, on and on for thirty years. I didn't even mention Reddit, all they do id argue there. Very inhospitable there. Just post your trees and move on. Thats all. What the hell you afraid of?
I’m not afraid of anything here. I do post trees. I do contribute as much as I am able, but then you don’t want a constant stream of nursery trees or undeveloped stumps. These 900 odd posts this past year are not all discussing bull. If I offer any advice I qualify it by expressing my lack of experience. I was once taught that one of the best ways of learning was by teaching. It helps you understand where the gaps in your knowledge are.

I don’t lash out through jealousy, but through despair. I get it, you’ve had a tough time as of late, but theres no need to be a dick all the time. Yes I’m ok if someone wishes to ignore advice. It’s advice, not instruction and it’s their tree. They look at it every day and they are allowed to feel about that tree however they like. Like I’ve said before, not everyone here wants to create showable trees. Most just want to enjoy keeping small trees in pots.

I personally don’t like using the ignore function. Particularly if it is ignoring a prominent member or a regular poster. You just end up missing too much information. I’d rather people could just be nice. Still, too much to ask of humans.

Thats my point. This is nothing new. I've been one eight forums and its been this way since 1997 for me. Not me specifically. hell recently I saw Sorce arguing with Adair, imagine that. A guy who never says anything about anybody, yet Sorce has to make some shit. I don't get it.

That's a good point. I just checked my ignore list, and about half of them were apparently temporary trolls, and no longer have profiles. I've unignored the other five or six, and will try it again.

Yeah I'm not getting at that stuff, how could I when I don't know anything about it? All I'm saying is, I currently wouldn't want you to comment on any of my photos, even with your extensive knowledge, which may make you think about why that is. Of course I don't expect you to care about my opinion - but if I'm thinking this, I'm sure other people are too, who you might care about.

Then that is a problem for you...this is a public forum and listening to other peoples ideas is part of the posting process. Thats what is hard to understand for some. There are over 18,000 people here, and about 40 do all the talking. Out of the 40, about ten have a tree worthy of putting into a show. Out of the thirty left, maybe half of them have posted a picture of a tree in training. Thats the facts.....

Which group you want to be in? When you pick the group, talk and post accordingly. You don't want my comment, don't post it.

I'm willing and want to listen to other people's ideas and I have been doing so - that's what brought me here and why I've stuck around. The only point I am making, to really simplify it, is that when you say your opinion and give advice in a positive way it has a much better impact. Which I'm sure you do, a lot of the time. I'm done now anyway, not here for an argument - was just giving my perspective, perhaps on behalf of some of the other newbies too.

I haven't paid much attention to this thread because it isn't the kind of thing that appeals to me. But I have paid enough attention to this site to know that there are way more than ten folks here who have show worthy trees.

Smoke, why you gotta be like this, man? You're breaking my heart. lol.

I would love to have something to look at for a change and I know there would be plenty to say about them. It would be all good from me. I don't wish to disparage peoples work, I wish to give my ideas on how to improve it. If you don't wish to use or take my ideas, then a simple "I've looked it over and I'm gonna pass on that Smoke", then I will ask why? Why would someone pass, probably because they don't have the chops to do the work. If they wish to convey those sentiments then the discussion for me is over. I've heard why, You just don't do it cause you don't have the chops to do the work necessary to get the tree to a better place. many here suffer from that. I have no idea why it is so hard to just admit that and make me go away.

See, that's where you lose people my friend. It's ok to not want to take someone's advice. It doesn't make you a bad person or someone who doesn't have "the chops". Don't take personal offense when someone disagrees with you! They're not (always) saying you're dumb or insulting your ability. And you don't have to be harsh when dishing it out. I know the "Japanese" thing seems to be that students should be grateful for their teacher's abuse but it don't gotta be like that!

More for you to look at and decide if your worthy to even talk in the same circle.

Now you're just being rude. You say you want people to talk about trees more but then say something like this like only people at the top of their game deserve to talk.

I like, Smoke, though. Even though he's mean to me sometimes he's also been super helpful and I do think some people are too quick to jump to attack him.
