Just went and looked at your thread!! Amazing tree and fall color. I’ve seen a number of KH with that color but this one fails the test. Kinda golden brown dead leaf look. Hopefully it’ll improve but maybe my climate. Hard tellin, not knowin’.

Yeah, I’ve been halfway looking for another KH to replace that one; they’re not easy to find. The fall color is amazing, but you’re probably right on the climate challenges. When we lived up north, fall colors weren’t great because early frost zapped the leaves before they really had a chance to turn. That’s not the case here, where we can get into November without a significant frost.Just went and looked at your thread!! Amazing tree and fall color. Fall color is governed by weather conditions. An extended cool & sunless period in late summer (early September for me) will get the best color, especially if a frost is involved. A long warm sunny autumn gives nothing but leaves slowly evolving to dead brown. A good year for KH...

You never did show some pics of these 1/2" leaves. Mine (KH) are not smaller than 3/4", which I considered pretty good.

The colors vary widely over the years, some perfect cycles of yellow-gold-orange-red, and others just petering out with dead brown. Last year was intermediate...

Realistically they are 1/2 to 3/4 inches depending on the plant and location on the plant. If you have 3/4 inch leaves I would say hurrah, instead of engaging in a pissing contest.
Leaves have just come out on my hornbeams. They are my favorite of all bonsai.

I don't think you meant it, given my experience of reading your posts, but it comes across as goading, as if to say "Come on, you told us about this great thing, now prove it".
Text over a forum, these misinterpretations are bound to happen.
Moving on though, I like this tree too. I don't tend to like clumps much, or trees in this form but this is nice. Also something to be said for its size. These days its just huge monster hornbeams, its nice to see something smaller. Less impressive but has a certain shine which the monster ones, don't.
Have you thought about maybe getting some more surface roots, to have the transition from base to soil, more transitioned? More taper in it? It doesn't need it, I just had to have a criticism of some sort.

I defolifate almost every year and have never seen a KH with smaller leaves than mine. When someone says they have leaves significantly smaller, that's something I want to see. There are, after all, many claims made here that are specious, so pictures of remarkable accomplishments are IMHO mandatory. The two photos in this post are the same tree, 2005 and 2020. You can see it was about 30" and is now about 16". I'm not crazy about the base of my tree and would lower it into the soil except that's the way roots are,-long, too long. I don't do the big chop thing. At 77, I could be dead before the sap dries. I still plant seeds, but I don't think ten years out. I maximize the "what is". Maybe the next owner...

Wowzer! Stunning, those who know me well...know that this tree speaks to me. Love the unusual base. Much more attraction for myself that it stands out next to the tree beside it. Very nice indeed!!!

I’ve always been plain vanilla...you have a way of goading. Then falling back on being victim. I realize there is no tone with text. But if you had a genuine question about leaf size...a poll to answer that...shouldn't get ones feathers up. But by all means let's keep hijacking a good thread. The only question about leaf size was the show me statement! Claim something extraordinary, show it. Period. "My flower is more red than yours." Are you supposed to take my word for it? Without the picture it ain't worth mentioning.
