Huangshan pine in training.

happy to say mine cleared the winter we only saw temps down to 12 degrees! that's a zone 8a winter here in eastern PA. No signs of growth but the trees are happy and have some wire on them. As tempted as I am to start another round of seeds, I think i'll pass because because of my climate. really hoping that I can limp along with one decent tree. Would love to have a tall slender homage to "southern song" style pines

As with other conifers, the seedlings crowded in Anderson flats seem to have grown taller than the seeds individual 4” pots, but have fewer lower branches.

These are just over 1 year old.

The natural curve !

While waiting for the next move on these seedlings, I have been studying its growth characteristics. I think it is important to do that, because the knowledge will help me in training this kind of pine later on.

This morning I found some a new sign orhebn this pine. A lot of them already have 1- 3 new long buds at the top of the Spring growth ! It is very fascinating!

They looks very strong and healthy. How old are they?
Looks like you did not wire them yet. Do you plan to train them as straight trunk literati?

the smaller about 1 year 2 months

We are testing -

[1] Time taken to get a 3 inch trunk [ for a 15 to 18 inch tall tree ]

[2] How well does it branch.

[3] we use Ling Nan [ grow and clip for training ]

Thanks for letting us know.
It totally surprise me that your pine are growing long without compaction, Some of my friends are also growing Huangshan pine in Vietnam, and their seedlings are very compacted (the distances between the bundles of needles are so closed to each other.
BTW, I love Ling Nan style

These below pictures were taken yesterday. It has interesting color !

The 2nd shoot of this season has green yellowish color

Last year growth has brown reddish color. There are scatted whitish streaks paralleled with the trunk axis.

I can’t wait to see its bark characteristics in a few years and later on !

They are growing in full speed here at this time. The new needle are flexible and long. It is about 20 cm I’m length !

In my opinion, September is a best time to work on pine seedlings. I have to stop working on junipers to pay attention to this group of Huangshan pine (HP). Up to this time, they are 20 months old. They have been growing well in my hot and dry weather! This morning I started taking them out to give them the first training in their lives for bonsai. I feel very confident because I have experience in JBP and KBP seedling training under my belt !

Its bark is very interesting with copper red color and ivory stripes.

It has shoots from the spring growth

Also has a candle at this time

The adult needles are long, almost 23 cm in length

I cut the shoot back to the lateral branches

Another one

This one is not too tall and already has some interesting trunk line in the lower part, I did not prune or wire. Just fertilized it.

All of them was fertilized with organic and inorganic fertilizers. I also fed them with humid acid granules .

10 of them were done this morning. About 50 more to go!

I finished working on all of 60 seedlings this morning (one week from starting)
A few of them weren’t wired or pruned at all. Some were wired. Most of them were pruned and wired.
During that time, some of signs are worth to mention.
1- some of very young needles show these

It explains why the adult needle has this kind of shape

I think it is also related to the fact the general shape of wild Huangshan pine.

2- the trunk is so flexible comparing to the black pine. It might also show on the needle to which found on 1- . I was able to use the wire with smaller size to hold the shape of trunk line .

With this characteristic, I firmly believe the Huangshan pine is perfectly suitable for literati style not only figuratively but literally meanings !

After 3 weeks, there are a lot of new shoots coming out now. Some trees have a new shoots emerging along the trunk !

I really like its young skin ! Any explanation?

I had read all your experience with the Pinus Hwanghanensis .

I really love Pinus uncinata, a pine we really like to use to bonsai in France.
My problem is i live in a city and in a low height above the sea (116m), so i had buy huangshan pines seeds.

Can you tell if this tree really suitable to bonsaï ?
Does it backbud good ? accept trim ?

Also i only have experience with Norway Spruce i seek for a specie of pine to care.

About climate, i assume it's pretty close to mine , worth a try?

Thanks for asking me. Since I only have about 20 month experience in Huangshan pine growing, I hope I could answer your questions.
1. They say my climate is similar to Mediterranian climate and Huangshan pine has been growing very well in my area. Your climate is almost as same as mine with hot dry summer and wet, cool in winter. So, Huangshan pine should be fine for your area, shouldn't it?
2. It backbuds well so far
3. It responds well with trimming
4. Yes, it is growing fast and tall. I like this characteristics because I love literati style. Huangshan pine is famous for its literati style in natural, isn't it?
5. I think it is very suitable for bonsai!

In summary, you should give it a try.
