the folks at bonsai west seem to think this is a good time to repot and style deciduous trees - i had always thought later in winter, but i’m itching to try stuff out. had some japanese maples in grow pots and put this together in the new @sorce pot

Way to early for my harsh winter climate, and I have a controlled cold greenhouse. My trees all are dormant. I don't typically repot until I see buds pushing. That is key...to understand climate/location and trees. My tropical get repotted in summer.

May I ask your process of development? I have obtained some chinese quince material and think I may want it to go in a similar direction. Martin Albek has something that looks similar that I just adore.

I love that pot, too.

Here's a natal plum I killed with impatience:

I just fool around. This was originally a root cutting. I wire in movement. It stay somewhat pliable so I can sort of change placement of branches to suit what I think looks interesting. Clip, grow, and wire. I have a surprise on this Toyonishiki. The pot is Tosui I bought in Japan at Taikanten show. Maybe 2019 or 18. @bleumeon was there. Saw Mr Kobayashi, Mr Suzuki, and others. Good times.

This shohin rose has some special meaning to me. It is one of the first things to start growing in my heated shed, so I repotted it in an absolutely beautiful Will Talbott pot! Although there are no shows this year, I still had some fun playing around with display options for the summer when the tree leafs and flowers out 🌸.

Hi. I just got this on the mail today and I am wondering if it should go outside in the snow or stay inside till it's warmer. Also next winter should it stay outside? In the garage? Inside with the tropicals?
Thanks!

It’s not hardy, but can take some cool weather. I bring mine in when temperatures are consistently in the mid-40s. It’s a fun plant.

Thanks for your quick response! It's adorable. It doesn't need to go dormant then? I thought it was hardy to zone 5 🤷🏽‍♂️
Isn't it called Alpine geranium?
So in mame groupings should it be in tropical or hardy groupings?
@Brian Van Fleet you've got an erodium grouped with juniper and pine etc right?

I have erodium as accent plants, and show them mostly when blooming.

Sorry about that! I'll make up by posting two trees this post and more than two pics! 😊
I also want to reconfirm. This is a species that can be used in combination with pine/juniper/"always outside" bonsai right because some varieties are hardy even, right? So putting it (in the display or as an accent) in a tropical/schefflera/ficus display may not be "appropriate" or is this actually one of the few that can bridge across given that it has been seen from zone 4 all the way to zone 9?
@Brian Van Fleet do you bring yours in when freezing temps arrive?
@ABCarve I know you said that you do; now, do you put it under grow lights? I did grow lights last year to no perceivable benefit and a ton of hassle so this year I did what I always do and just put them in south facing and house temps are in 60s so they have a little bit of dormant time. Garage cold storage doesn't make sense I am assuming for the erodiums?

In a formal display, it is more important to use trees that symbolize or represent their growing area within the display. Box displays and even shelf-type displays represent mountains, so mountain trees go higher (pines & junipers), followed by hardwoods (elm, zelkova, hornbeam), and lowland trees (fruiting, flowering, maples) at the bottom. Informally, go with what looks good together. I don’t think a pine goes well with a nerifolia but that’s personal. Someone may have the right combo to pull it off visually.

Yep.

I packed a gallon of cactus soil/microlife organics and foliar spray this little jewel. Maybe in 10 years it’ll spilt the granite and I can harvest or just enjoy watching it flourish with a helping hand.
