Yesterday a friend stopped by from the other side of the Netherlands. I used the opportunity to have a tree shipped from his region to my garden. This is the last of a series of trident maples imported from probably Korea by a trader in the Netherlands. Last year I bought one too. As bigger pieces are hard to get and can get costly, I accept the fact that a lot of work is needed, in exchange for a smaller part of my morgage.

As it is much milder on the Dutch coast than in my garden, the trident had already started pushing, where in my yard the tridents are just showing little red tips around the buds. So no time was wasted, and I reworked the roots, trimmed the shoots and repotted..

This year I will focus on establishing a new leader, let that shoot and in mid-spring I will work on the old cuts (Unless I find myself with nothing to do later this week). Guess it will take a few years to get a bit of extention in place, and the old cuts to close. During that period the nebari will probably develop a little too :).

I must admit, I am happy to have them. I would love one, one step bigger but I have never seen raw material that size for sale. Which is why I decided to get this one. On the store website I saw the new stock of this year had gone up substantially in price already. Seems like big tridents in Europe are rare.

Very nice tree. BTW, let me ask from my lack of knowledge (beginner, three years so far in bonsai), is it ok to repot a trident maple meanwhile leafs are starting to push? I'm asking because I have one in this stage and needs a repot...

It is a little late, pushing mayube. But I have another in the same series, bought last year. I did the repot over winter and noticed how horrible the roots were so decided to get it out of the way.

I am not gentle to my trees.

Wonderful looking trident.!

I am hoping to get some material like this in europe too but most tridents sold here are all straight trunks mostly.

Well.. This one I got in Europa. Check out bonsai plaza.
And the facebook european auctions group had some a few weeks back, might be worth to follow.
