Shimpaku pre-shohin

This is a juniper I've had for a bit. It was planted out in my yard maybe 11 years ago as 3 gal nursery stock. I dug it up 3 years ago prior to my move to GA and kept it in a nursery can until last spring when I got it into it's current pot. This past summer, I reduced some of the overlong branches and started working on the deadwood. I'm going to let it grow for a bit then continue to work the deadwood and give it its intitial wiring this summer/fall. It is about a foot tall now, has a 5" root spread, and the trunk is 3" thick just above the nebari...I envision the final tree will be about 7" tall. Thoughts/comments are welcome.

Yes!!!....but my younger sister is getting married that day up on Cape Cod

. I hope the invitation still stands to come out and visit some other time.

Really nice piece of material. What I find the most disheartning, and this one looks to be similer, is that when working with these larger shrubs that have been cut down a suitable "shohin" pot is out of the question.

Has this piece been previewed for that in the future and will it fit into a nice small pot? Maybe a kifu sized tree is the goal?

You are probably right...shoehorning this tree into a suitable "shohin" pot will not be happening for many years, if ever. I drastically reduced the root system to get it into this pot, and will continue to reduce it when able to. Maybe in another 10 years...

I really like the tree and I know you have not asked for advice but have you thought of putting the tree into a screen sided container for a few years to develop a bunch of really fine roots? I have with this method managed to develop the kind of root system that has allowed me to take a tree in a three gallon nursery pot, severely root bound and in a few years being able to get it into a Shohin pot.

Thanks Vance. As a matter of fact, I was planning to get this tree into a colander before my move to GA and then promptly forgot about the tree (other then watering) until last spring. I think that might be the way to go, though.

I hope I am not intruding on your thread but I thought you might want to see a Shimpaku I have been working on from a 3 gallon nursery container. I just started restyling it a year ago this summer. I had no time to work on it this last summer because I was away from home more than I was here and everything was only kept alive. It was grown in one of my planters for a number of years to develop a fine root system.

The tree is about 9 inches tall.

No, I'm pretty sure she doesn't

...the first week of April is spring break, so she picked this date because her nieces/nephews from GA and CA can make it.

Well, the tree had its first styling/wiring and was re-potted into thye pond basket about 2 months ago. It's growing well and will only be fed and watered for the rest of this year. I also intend to cover some of the shallow rootage witha bit more soil.
