Thanks, that's helpful. I'm in Wellington. Do you have any experience of reducing the root ball on these? I think I read somewhere that they don't really like it if you take off too much. I'm a few years away from doing much on that front, but thinking ahead. As you say, very slow so I don't want to kill it.

Yep re cutting roots. Although 75% may be a little rash, I have done so. They complain as in don’t grow much for the first year after, then they are underway again. I think if you have plenty of feeders in a pot etc it is way different to digging one out of the ground. Different story all together.

@fredman lives in the Wellington and I am from Canterbury. There is a thread started by @sorce called Sohem or like that. Maybe he will help me locate the thread etc. Lots of discussion there about NZ natives also.

Wow, I've only ever heard of one of those species. Looks like I don't know it all, after all.

@SpOoNzL. What are your plans for the kauri. I've had a couple in a pot for a few years, but haven't done much with it so far.

@scubily This is going to be a long term project for me. I plan on letting it grow for a few more years till the trunk gets abit thicker then I would to try style it like the great Tane Mahuta tree. The Tree already has heaps of branches to work with the challenge will be trying to keep them alive and healthy while I let a sacrificial apex grow before chopping back.

Update to my 4 Jan post. Took one of the large branches of my totora this weekend. Planning to leave the other one for another season. Pot has blown over a few times this winter so may need a bit of duct tape to keep it going until I want to repot!

Growing seasons around the world vary widely and it is difficult to get a perspective on what someone says when we don't know where in the world they are. If you go to the upper right hand corner and click on your Icon, you can add your location and people will be able to customize advice for you, and you might connect with another local.

Hi scubily,
Great to see your post, and Totaras are fun and fast to ramify, as you will know from your own tree.
Just seen your Kowhai (Sophora Dragons Gold??). Great to have some flowers in the Winter.

Yup, dragons gold. Usually flowers about this time of year, and then drops all its leaves. I'm not doing much with it at the moment except letting it grow.

Update on my June 2021 post. Chopped the other branch off my totora and trimmed the roots a bit.
