Here's a tree I collected up in the bogs of northern Vancouver Island three years ago while photographing Dan Robinson collecting for my book. It's a Shore pine, a Contorta contorta that is more contorted than most due to the conditions there.

This was a long straggly thing with a great base. They are know for their hardiness and limberness, so I thought I could do something with it over the next few years, and this progression will show that.

The first three photos show it potted into a grow pot, and initial styling - especially hollowing out the heartwood at one spot of the long trunk, allowing me to safely impose a very sharp bend.

The base on that tree is amazing. Is it rooted all along that length? I love how dark the bark is.
