    Shimpaku question about first transplant

Adair and Brian, I have root tips poking out of the colander. It has only been 10 weeks since Adair and I repotted the "kashima" maple in early February. I had to do the in and out shuffle a couple of times but its going like gangbusters now.

    Sharpening a Grafting Knife

Great post and photos. Brian, by the way, in the world of sharpening knives, a discussion of different stones will evoke as many opinions as a soil thread evokes here. I recently went down that rabbit hole and was amazed at the variety of stones used to sharpen and the progression from 200 grit...

    Needle Cast Treatment schedule/life cycle

I had pretty bad case of needle cast on my Japanese black pines last year. In researching, some advocate spraying every 2-3 weeks. Others say to spray around the time the "fungus fruiting bodies start to emit fungus particles". I want to treat for needle cast, but avoid spraying if it is not...

    Puppy Advice Needed

I hid a treat in my puppy's crate so every time he entered it, there was a good surprise. He did not see me put it there so the positive association was with the crate. Now, I can just say "crate" and he runs to it.

    Any "One Note" tutorial suggestions?

Barney, The column you are seeing on the left is the same as the tabs referred to above, just displayed differently. You can "park" the tabs in that column to show more on the screen. You can "unpark" them so they display as tabs. I bought some quick reference charts from http://www.beezix.com...

    I just can't "Facebook"

Closed? I bid on a Sara Rayner pot in an auction that ended Saturday 5 PM Pacific time and was notified late last night I was the winning high bidder. They do mark auctions as "closed" when an auction ends but they usually have one a week from what I have seen.

    I just can't "Facebook"

There are a couple of bonsai auction and sales groups on FB that have some interesting material, prebonsai, and pots. I recently bought a large Kashima maple and a Sara Raynor pot there.

I am using a no odor http://shop.curvybranchbonsai.com/Rapeseed-Cakes-25-KG-Imported-Bonsai-Fertilizer-from-Japan-YOSOM-2.htm fertilizer but the dog-gone squirrels are turning pots over to get to these. Any tried and true methods for keeping them away would be helpful. Any one used things like...

    Wanted" Kogetsu Satsuki

Adair, I like the flowers of the kogetsu. The photos I have seen of it display nice white and a red that is deeper and less pinkish/purple with lots of variation in the coloration pattern. When I think of satsuki, that is the typical flowers in my opinion. The variety seems rare. Rick Garcia...

    Wanted" Kogetsu Satsuki

I am looking for a kogetsu satsuki azalea that does not cost an arm and a leg. Anyone know where I can but a starter of this variety? Thanks Frank

Questions I never asked because they might make me look stupid

Along the lines of Brian's comment about recessive branches, some books on satsuki discuss which branches to use as a source of cuttings so the daughter plant retains the multi-color flowers of the parent. Apparently if you take the cutting from a branch with red flowers, you most likely will...
