    Melaleuca

Powerful yet graceful, really love the movement in this one, Craig. Well done!

    Ulmus Favoritus!

The thickening rate is unreal when you let them go. You're getting me excited to do some digging, got a cork bark in the growing area I been eyeing off for awhile, taper is nearly non existent but the movement and branches are there for a nice airy feminine tree. I think I should wait another...

    some collected projects

My thoughts are along the lines of 'how much is shipping'? Seen a lot of these beautiful WA grown raphs getting around, jealous! I also note your technique of exposing live veins, can you elaborate more on this? Fascinated by the hardiness on mels and their rivalry with Junipers. We don't have...

    Ficus Virens Progression

Anything would be an improvement. Especially seeing as they limit your pot selection being so large. Cut 'em off, and while you're at it, flat cut the base!

    Ficus Virens Progression

Majority were cut off, they were simply too thick to be in proportion with the tree. They were also thicker towards the ends, reverse taper in roots is plain ugly. All the cut sites have sprouted roots and selection was done on what to keep. I will grab a photo at next repot, just give me 4-5 months

    Dwarf Crepe Myrtle

2 year update shows .. no progress! This species develops fast but I don't seem to be going in a clear direction. Ive just cut back pretty hard so Ive lost most of last years ramification. Really just wanted to get rid of the mess and establish a clear structure. I've swayed away from the...

    2 x Ficus Obliqua

An update on the big fella, growth has been good, branches are ramifying and leaves reducing nicely. Some branches are beginning to get leggy and will require cut back in future, hoping for some lucky back budding. I will let it grow until late spring so its nice and vigorous, then comes the...

    Ficus Virens Progression

Filling out again, got some good shoots on both outer trunks to build an apex so I wired movement into them and will let them thicken up. Its Winter, growth has slowed significantly but never quite comes to a complete halt.

    The ugly elm challenge.

    Why is the bottle full?

    a few junipers

Nice trees mate, really diggin' the semi cascade in the first post though I'd ditch the jins poking out of the lower foliage

    Bilbo's juniper #3

Nice start so far, I prefer the one insult pee year method with junipers but it should be fine if you leave it untouched for the next year. $16?! Now go buy another one from the same source!

    Tiger Bark Ficus; in development

I live in a hot humid climate and find leaving the growing tips defeats the purpose of defoliating, if you are defoliating to build ramification. I find few buds will actually respond. I only remove leaves but leave the growing tip if I'm trying to thicken a branch and the inner leaves are...

    Bilbo's LED Experimentation tent.

You won't be able to force a dormancy mid summer unless you're putting your trees in your fridge. Its not (just) colder temps which send trees dormant, its the decrease in daylight hours. In summer you're getting an extra 4 hours of sun. I doubt your Maples will make it past the 3rd year. You've...

    Casuarina

Fantastic, i'll have to try this as well as making sure to remove strong upward growth earlier. Once a sacrifice gets a bit of steam the tree sends all its energy there. Optimum timing for this procedure? I'm guessing anywhere from mid spring to late summer? Nice movement on that last one:cool:

My bad, that should just read tertiary. Interesting that you remove all foliage, do you pluck them off with fingers or just cut very short?

    Pick a front, any front

Keep it, let it run and fatten right up

Elm that thinks its a Ficus

Do you mean cut hard during dormancy or after the first flush hardens? I've tried cutting back to 2-3 nodes during dormancy which really only resulted in one node taking off, the other buds just set and wait. Ive heard similar reports from Aussie growers with only getting 1 flush per year. I'm...

    Casuarina

Thanks Craig, I will take it on board. I did have a decent looking torulosa I was developing that just decided to die. So now I'm left with a handful of glauca's, I had developed primary branching and then performed the twist method to begin secondary/tertiary and it hasn't really done anything...

Elm that thinks its a Ficus

I could say the new front was a stand against @carp's intended view, but that may be used as evidence...in any case, I'm actually surprised at the progress looking at the pics. I'd love some advice from @BobbyLane and in the meantime will be studying the carving work of will baddeley

Elm that thinks its a Ficus

Dammit, I knew someone would at least pick on the crinkles, let alone the blood stains. Duly noted, @sorce...in my defence I did go for the timber background but the bark blended in too well and didn't make for a decent photograph. It's all in the detail ;)

    Casuarina

Nice! Any tips on how to manage these things? What species is it? I've been told to prune by twisting the foliage off at a node but I really think it depends on the species as to how they respond. They rival black pines when done correctly but I'm still learning. I have a good size C. Glauca...

    Bilbo's LED Experimentation tent.

Mate...you're in NSW, yeah? This is unnecessary, you'll get year round growth with most plants anyway. Deciduous trees need dormancy otherwise they burn out. Mother Nature knows what she's doing, it's winter, kick back and take a break. Spring growth will sweep you off your feet

    Torulosa 'Hollywood' Juniper

Still persevering. This has got to be one of my slowest growers. Slight turn, bit of a tilt, some wire. Its looking close to how I imagined but the foliage ain't working for the size of the tree. Canopy is too heavy. I finally got my hands on a Shimpaku, maybe time to start reading up on grafting...

Elm that thinks its a Ficus

2 years on... I've ditched the aerial roots. I originally felt they added interest but really they were just a distraction, plus they were hiding a lot of the trunks character. I am yet to work out how to achieve more than one real growth flush per season, I tried partial defoliation last year...
