    New Trident

Yes and yes. Where I drew the green dot is a node. You should get plenty of back budding there. Remember to seal all of your cuts. @Shibui gives great advice on cutting those roots (and in general 🙂). After you cut them, bury them in the soil. You'll get new roots forming further back. This is...

    New Trident

I would chop where I've drawn the red line. You should get buds popping at the node indicated by the green dot. The branch, as it is, has zero taper and zero movement. This is called a "stove pipe" in bonsai and is not desirable. If it were mine, I'd chop down the right-hand trunk a bit as...

    New Trident

I agree. Narrower sub-trunk is usually shorter. It's the same thing that would happen in nature. The dominant trunk is usually thicker and taller.

What are your pesky bonsai weeds?

Like many others, I am constantly battling Oxalis. The stuff @PaulH said about it being a vector for nematodes is news to me. Just another reason to hate Oxalis, I guess. I thought nematodes were mostly a problem if you have poor draining soil with low oxygen conditions. Hopefully, it's not as...

What would you do with this Drake elm?

Elms have a unique ability to grow new buds from the cambium layer. This means you could chop this anywhere you want (even as low as at the soil level... or below!) and it will sprout.

What would you do with this Drake elm?

Growing it won't stretch that distance. Trees grow from the apical meriistem (top). Regardless, Brian is suggesting you grow it to thicken the trunk. After it's thickened to a size you like, you chop it down. New buds will then form below the chop and you treat one of them as the new top. This...

Do You YouTube? Favorite bonsai person to follow

Without question, my favorite bonsai YouTube channel is Bonsaify . @Eric Schrader is a phenomenal teacher. Bjorn and Ryan's channels are great, but Eric's instruction for working material that the average bonsai enthusiast has access to is second to none. Also, he tends to focus on shohin, which...

    US Bonsai in 20 years?

This right here is exactly what I was thinking. The number and increased involvement of these bonsai professionals has absolutely exploded in the last 15 years. With the establishment of more of these professionals, their respective nurseries, workshops and demos, online presence, increasing...

    The Tree Thread

Great composition, Nao. I've loved Vine Maple since I was in college in Humboldt County. It is a lovely sight in the under story of a northwest forest. I love the leaves and sinuous lines of the trunks. I think it's underused and under-explored as bonsai. Apparently it's internodes tend to be...

Creating bonsai from nursery stock (acer palmatum atropurpureum)

Id cut that low sacrifice ASAP, Sean. That's getting thick enough to leave a decent chop scar, and pines don't heal chops that well. Those low sacrifices are great for developing a thick base and taper, but the scars suck.

How much trunk chop is too much? (Ulmus americana)

What Brian said. Cut low. There isn't anything above this that is worth keeping. It is a taperless telephone pole. You'll be happier in the long run if you chop down around where Ive indicated. Should bud back no problem. If you really wanted to salvage more material, you could air layer at the...
